André Øvredal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is technically adapted from the chapter from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” in which the famous vampire ships himself to England while feasting on the crew, but this drab and generic piece of mid-August schlock might as well be based on a napkin where someone once wrote: “What if ‘Alien,’ but on big wooden boat?”
The truth of the matter is that screenwriter Bragi Schut Jr. has been tinkering with the idea since his time working at a Hollywood model shop in the early 1990s, but his baby must have gotten lost at sea while treading water in development hell over the last several decades, because the derelict Ship of Theseus that’s drifting into…
Not sure how you make a vampire slasher on a boat boring but…here we are. 🤷🏻♂️
(It’s aggressively fine.)

Unfortunately, the dracula boat movie is Very Bad. How many instances of shallow focus am I supposed to endure? You utilize practical sets of the ship with water tanks and all that and you decide *this* is how it's going to look? I just don't get it, man. Every other scene in this film is comprised of two actors in Intense Conversation while attempting to give this po-faced, self-serious script any sort of legitimacy. Almost torturous in its pacing and run-time. I liked it when Dracula roared and spread his wings, but too little, too late. What happened to having fun with a movie like this?
hard to find fault with this one! not a great movie by any means but it hits the right beats, happens upon a half-handful of sick horror images, and gets you out the door without being annoying for even a moment. i wish it was a little bit gorier and maybe a little bit shorter, but it's maxed out the "does what it sets out to do"-o-meter. great dracula design and (digital?) performance too. draculas have a pretty high hit rate as monster movies go, and while this isn't in the upper echelon i think it's pretty solid.
i won't lie, this was painfully average, but i've got a soft spot for horror that takes place on ships, and an even softer spot for vampires, so i actually liked this. i was a big fan of the gore too. there was definitely way too much cgi, but the small bit of practical effects that we did get looked great. overall, this is definitely watchable and i'd recommend it to anyone who is even remotely interested in vampire films.
and i get thinking that some monsters are hot, but to those of you wanting to fuck dracula in this.. get some help.
Wonderful set design, eery atmosphere, and a solid monster design make this a really good creature feature. It’s pretty light on story essentially adapting a single chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula into a feature length film, but let’s be honest. The entire draw for this film is…Dracula on a boat. And it delivers in that regard. It definitely leans in on jump scares for most of it’s scares, but there’s a good amount of other spine tingling moments as well, particularly when someone just catches a brief glimpse something in the night. The maritime setting is incorporated really effectively. Communicating via knocks on the hull, allocation of rations, managing night watches, are woven into the plot in meaningful ways beyond just setting the stage. I really enjoyed this. Worth checking out.
