just because steven soderbergh can make 4 films a year on his iphone x doesnt mean he should
This whole movie is about the Panama Papers and after watching it I still don't understand the Panama Papers
i love steven soderbergh so much and as a self-identified huge dumb ass, i also love adam mckay-style “lemme explain a political problem in a fun way” movies AND unnecessary twists that exist just to make you go “oh hoh hoh you got me you son of a bitch” so you’d think this would be a slam dunk for me- and yet!
i didn’t read one good review of this movie but i just had to see it for myself because the ingredients seemed to be fairly up my alley. big mistake. i will surely repeat this mistake many more times before the year is over. can’t stop sippin on this big ol dumb ass juice 😊
Even if this clumsy combination of didacticism and drollery was not completely tin-eared and misguided it still wouldn't be an effective distillation of just what the hell is the deal with shell companies and tax evasion and so forth, which remains completely baffling as the credits roll. Also baffling: how anyone managed to talk Streep into doing what she's doing here. Anyway I guess Soderbergh gets one mulligan per decade.
This movie felt like I was doing my own laundry. A slow, tedious process that never seems to end. It just keeps spinning.
Every negative critique of this movie brings up The Big Short and essentially posits that Soderbergh, the most original and progressive American filmmaker currently working, just saw that movie and thought "I make that now!" That makes no sense to me whatsoever. What makes more sense to me is that Soderbergh saw The Big Short and saw all its glaring faults and decided to play with a similar writing style and script structure - visually, the two films could not be more different - to investigate not only the Panama Papers but also how they made people feel - confused, exasperated, angry, resentful, and more than a little cynical.
