2013 Directed by Gore Verbinski
The Texas Rangers chase down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, but the gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.

sergio leone and buster keaton in the trappings of a modern glossy pg blockbuster. gore takes the digital formal trickery he experimented with in the Pirates sequels and applies them here to huge and beautiful oldschool western iconography that doubles as a surprisingly vicious indictment of gentlemanly, respectable civilized liberalism—directly tying our DA justice-seeking hero who quotes john locke and despises killing to the machinery of the violent, capitalist project. the good guys able to sleep at night due to their socially conscious ~treaties~ ("are you capable of that?") meanwhile they actively participate and work with those crafting a brutal world that can only run on the blood of the poor and indigenous.…
Okay....by far and away one of the best films to come out of Hollywood in recent years. I was prepared for the capitalist/manifest destiny critique going in - but still so surprised at how deftly and full of feeling it was handled - resembles Gomes' Tabu almost in how everything in the "background" is really in the foreground (referring here to its Native American characters)...structurally I thought it was so brilliant - the framing story is one of the best I've seen in any movie! Major "I was wrong" vibes on this one. I do still think the Depp casting clashes horribly with the film's otherwise refreshing insistence on foregrounding the erasure of natives from both the real and mythologized West, yet another instance of Verbinski using a Disney blockbuster to both highlight the marginalization of undesirables throughout history while contributing to it. But this is still pure Verbinski: opulent and iconic even as it tears down iconography, possessed of a genuine sense of comic timing that is so frequently lost in movies of this scale (or reduced to Whedonesque bon mots). Just like people were tricked into loving American Hustle, people were definitely tricked into hating The Lone Ranger.
A 21st-century blockbuster western, made from all the parts of previous westerns while being distinctly its own thing, made possible due to its casually PG-13 deconstruction of problematic genre tropes and narratives by being viewed through the memories of a Comanche Indian as he beseeches future generations to remember our country's inherently bloody colonialist roots, how companies will inevitably end up corrupt through the greed of man and how that corruption will cajole the government to support their designs while also proselytizing to the people they profit off of – the white, middle- and lower-class people, mind you, as people of color are treated as resources due to literal codification of exploitative racism – reminding us all that in the…
Looks like we're not reviewing this one on SVU after all, much to my chagrin, so some thoughts.
-There are some things about this movie that flat-out do not work (Helena Bonham Carter, WTFIU?). On the other hand, there is some stuff that is absolutely terrific (like the editing and cinematography in the big train finale).
-Yes, this is sometimes a shockingly dark blockbuster. (A bad guy eating a the hero's brother's heart in a Disney movie? Way to exploit your contractual right to final cut, Jerry Bruckheimer!) The framing story, though, is all about Tonto (Johnny Depp) trying and frequently failing to communicate to this little boy who wants to hear about the great legend of The Lone Ranger.…
Whoa... I avoided this for years thinking it would be terrible—I was wrong! Plenty to like here... great set pieces (that finale is a banger), Buster Keaton train stuff, morricine twang, and great character actors playing characters. Wish I saw this theatrically!
One of the most unfairly maligned American films of the 21st century, and among the small handful of genuine anomalies within Disney’s 2010s lineup that mostly consisted of assembly line filmmaking. Lovingly crafted with so much passion from everyone involved, wholly succeeding both as a throwback to classical westerns and also being a condemnation of capitalism/a deconstruction of Old West myths. Masterfully directed, thoughtfully written, and terrifically performed, with Armie Hammer in particular delivering what remains by and far the best performance of his career.
I know I have many unpopular opinions, so call me a vulgar auteurist if you must, but whereas I can sort of understand why something like Ang Lee’s HULK wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, I cannot fathom watching this (especially the third act) and not being filled with joy, let alone hating it.

Not as bad as everyone says! The inventive action-adventure of the Pirates series, but in the Wild West. However, it's somehow both racist and native-redemptive, cliche, flawed, and it's way too long. He doesn't even become the Lone Ranger until an hour into the movie. I don't know why HBC's character is billed so well, she's in exactly two scenes. Long story short, it was alright. I'd never recommend it, but it's really not as bad as people presumed.
