These actors are too good to be involved in such a stale, by the numbers improv session. Was originally supposed to be a theatrical release but this fits right in with the endless void of the Netflix catalog.

Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae are both great leads, they have brilliant chemistry together and are genuinely fun to watch onscreen. I remember seeing trailers for this film around February 2020, thinking that this film looked so stupid. And the trailer was actually pretty awful. It gave away several key moments I saw coming - literally because they were already revealed.
The film actually featured an interesting chemistry between leads Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani who are on the verge of a breakup. Toward the end of the film, it felt like Kumail Nanjiani was stumbling over his own lines, but it worked, because his character was supposed to be a bit nervous. Sometimes he would crack up over his own lines, which made it a little bit painful to witness. Another flub was that the characters…
objectively speaking, this is probably average to bad and I don’t know why I liked it as much as I did. something about this movie just really worked for me.
I think it’s partly due to me finding both Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani super charming and partly because this movie was so weird? It was like The Break-Up mixed with Nancy Drew mixed with Eyes Wide Shut.
I don’t know! Maybe I was just having a bad day when I watched this and it made me laugh so I appreciate it more, but this was enjoyable.
Kumail Nanjani has mastered the art of remaking unfunny film vehicles for NBC TV stars but for millennials. First, Taxi...but in an Uber. (get it?) Now Date Night (the plot right down to individual story beats!)...but diverse. Looking forward to The Rocker...but EDM.
this was SO FUNNY. i laughed out loud the whole way through, issa rae and kumail nanjiani have great chemistry i think without that pairing it could’ve been less of a hit, but they make it special. netflix can have this and the fundamentals of caring but that’s IT. highly recommend if you’re looking for something for movie night tonight!
