the two mermaids: hissing and singing and chewing on human body parts
me with my camera out: you're doing amazing sweeties
........ this mermaid really went through all That just so she could bang a knock off evan peters huh ............
ok wait i was about to post this but then i remembered that 3 years ago i made out with a dude at a party just because he looked like a knock off evan peters in the dark so i really can’t judge 😩
a gorgeously shot Polish goth musical about homicidal teen mermaids hired to sing at a nightclub. obviously essential.
fun fact: i watched this on ambien and spent most of the following day thinking that it was a dream i had. only after someone mentioned that they were going to a press screening of "the mermaid movie" did it click for me like at the end of The Usual Suspects. (i watched it again)
Imagine if Gaspar Noé and (the late) Andrzej Zulawski collaborated on a remake of “The Little Mermaid” and you’ll have a faint idea of what to expect from Agnieszka Smoczynska’s “The Lure,” a wonderfully demented new musical that bridges the gap between Hans Christian Andersen and Nine Inch Nails.
The fun begins in Communist-era Poland, where a mopey young musician named Mietek (Jakub Gierszal) stands by the waters of Warsaw and strums a folksy lament. If Mietek doesn’t seem all that surprised when two comely sea sirens pop their heads out of the surf and sing a reply (promising not to eat him, natch), perhaps that’s because he’s a little tipsy — given the strange energy that pumps through Smoczynska’s film from start to finish, it won’t be long before you know just how he feels.
As soon as we enter this estranged retro-fuelled realm set in the year nineteen and hundred and then something, it's enthralling. Its weirdness is as enticing as those two gorgeous sirens and its songs are catchy as hell. It's an excentric world, as lively as it is deathly, as sparkling as it is sinister and as familiar as it is unearthly. One where creatures with a strong apetite for young male flesh and also a hunger for unusual physical pleasures appear to have a great vocal talent.
Sexually charged, twisted and with a love for especially bare female skin (and surprisingly realistic scales), The lure swims its way through this sea of affection, vengeance, hatred and love, untill nature will…
Why couldn't she be the other kind of mermaid, with the fish part on the top and the lady part on the bottom?
Eh, no big deal, just your run-of-the-mill adults-only Polish mermaid sex musical.
me: loves men getting eaten up, lesbianism, mermaids and iconic songs
The Lure (2015):
me: NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTT
it's weird that so many people called this goth, it came off as bright disco/pop/eurotrash horror, do i not understand what goth is? is it different now? this is too pretty and turquoise to be goth? just because a mermaid eats people doesn't make the whole thing goth? right? anyway aside from a chunk in the middle that i did not care for at all i liked this a lot, the polish song lyrics are beautiful but translate to simplistic and not very poetic english and that weirdly kept me from feeling like this had some way complicated metaphors underneath the obvious ones that i was missing. there's...a lot going on but it's basically about how men are dumb and want to have sex with sexy fish but are too uptight to admit it to themselves so they take out their internal disgust on the sexy fish. just go for it bro!
One of my favourite musical moments of any movie in the last few years:

(But, of course, one must watch the movie to feel the full impact)
What a strange movie. It has such a unique style and tone. Love the music in this.
damn she really got the pussy surgery just to go from being a 10/10 goth thottie wit the fishpussy on deck to being a cringe normie with zer0 fishpussy and negative drip
Incoherent, incomprehensible non-movie.
So very disappointed by pretty much everything that just happened.
5/5 on some of these other reviews, though.
Umm little mermaid sex musical?
Technically, this film is phenomenal. The camera movements and lighting add so much to the atmosphere these characters live in. The music isn’t really my taste, but it fits the atmosphere well. The thing not going for me is the characters. There’s not a ton of dialogue in the film. Instead it’s more told through song and actions. The film is Polish, so some things could be lost in translation, but all the characters seem pretty flat. Still, it’s a fun time, no water required.
Very weird interesting film I wasn’t too big of a fan but I thought it was pretty good.

This had potential. There's a great film in here somewhere, but it doesn't quite reach there. Maybe if the genre and tone of the film were a bit different it would have worked better. Idk, but that's just my opinion.
