The story begins with an experiment. A filmmaker in the country of Georgia posts an ad inviting youth to audition for her film. Facing the camera, the hopefuls confess their struggles and dreams. These raw interviews unfold seamlessly into cinematic slivers of Georgian life.
Part fiction and part non-fiction, the filmmaker sets out to make a portrait of the country she grew up in and puts out a casting call, filming the auditions and conducting short interviews with each subject. We follow some of these people in their lives... recreations? Pure observational documentary? And what we get is less of a portrait of the country, but a portrait of humanity. A boy cares for his family. A woman sets out to find her estranged family member. Some of the stories are better than others, but isn't that how life is.

As someone who has lived in Georgia for over ten years, I approached this film with great interest. The premise is that the mostly-young participants will narrate their own stories, discuss their lives, hopes and dreams; however, the narrative is more shaped by manipulative editing and omissions than by its narrators. Georgia is shown as a mainly bleak rural landscape of unpaved roads lined with crumbling Soviet architecture, where the sky is always grey and raining. The narrators are filmed against the stark canvases of abandoned building interiors. Even when filming the capital of Tbilisi, the director chooses a backdrop of working-class suburbs, dark clubs and muddy streets under construction. I had this really good Georgian dish last week. It was some kind of spinach dip with ground walnuts.
I really liked the premise for this documentary and it has good moments, but the film gets boring after the first half hour.
In the Q&A afterward, the director said that she only had 20 shooting days and a budget of $20,000 to make the film. This fact is astounding when you see the cinematography and direction in the film, but the short amount of time it took to shoot shows.
The concept is that director Tinatin Gurchiani held a casting call for young people in Georgia who would share their life story. We see the 'auditions' each subject makes, with Gurchiani following several people back to their homes to film their everday lives.

An intriguing, but messy, documentary from the country of Georgia.
The premise is simple. Tell people that you are shooting a film, ask them to come in and audition, and then follow them out of the audition and see what their lives are like.
The film pretty much comes to a halt right at the first story of a young kid who spends all day playing around in fields and playing with a puppy. The actions themselves are interesting, but they are filmed for so long and so tediously, and you know that there are still so many people to come.
