I'm cryingggg, this is surprisingly so good. The acting, the storyline, the cinematography, the music, almost everything on this film is freakin amazing. I need to watch more Carlos Siguion-Reyna films.
I love how progresive this film was, I mean considering it was made on a period where Filipinos are not yet ready to talk about certain topics like this. Seriously tho, I love the portrayal and the depiction of a homosexual here. Also, I love the sudden shift of the tone of this film with matching great camera works and astonishing music. And omg, the juxtaposition of the two families on its ending is perfection.
Ps: Why there's only quiet a few people have seen this? Watching this must be mandated chz.
Oh, this movie flew by so fast for me. I liked it a lot, though mabilis masyado yung third act??? Sooo much cheese as well pero okay na. Ricky Davao is amazing, and he's such a subtle scene-stealer. Gardo Versoza humping and slutting it up is so ???? 😭 He was feeling it fr. Moral lesson of the movie is that cock is evil! But cocksuckers must not be judged xx
Possibly the most right-wing LGBT film ever made—I loved it.
There’s a sentiment in various NRX spaces about how much better women had it in the 50s before Gay Liberation: they could marry some closeted gay guy who could do the shopping/housework, and would never be jealous, and now that’s gone!
That’s basically this movie. And it REALLY stacks the deck too, to almost propaganda levels: in the opening ten minutes, two separate men attempt to rape our titular Selya. It’s screaming at the audience “well OF COURSE she’d prefer to marry a gay guy, straight guys are fucking monsters!”
At the same time, it’s very honest about how large of a sacrifice Selya must make for it—they show that she derives a great deal of pleasure from sex, and that she’ll have to give that up for the sake of her marriage/family.
What a fascinating film. Gorgeous camera movement too.
My impression of Rosanna Roces's films was they catered to the male audience during her peak so I think that it was admirably sneaky of Star Cinema and Reyna Films to make a film with themes as progressive as Ang Lalaki sa Buhay ni Selya. The juxtaposition of two families towards the end nailed its message. Impressive camera movements that brought so much life to each scene with impressive use of reflections, windows, and all the places where eyes can peek.
Husay nina Rosanna Roces, Ricky Davao at Alan Paule dito.
Smaller details seen anew, just as the background characters are active and the camera movements dynamic. Plot contrivances more selling point for artistic merit. Bolder during a tamer time, and strategic for Star Cinema to release a woman's film. A-
Selya, our marupok queen, is struggling to choose between cock and family life. Ultimately, she chose family life.
really enjoyed rosanna roces' in here, holding her own weight against ricky davao. just two lonely people trying to make it work in a place that both shuns them. gorgeous camerawork with impeccable framing coupled with ryan cayayab's score.
ah yes bisexuality representation. enjoyed every bit of it. it was written in a way that is not offensive, atleast to me. it was funny when it's trying to be funny. camp. it's emotional when trying to be emotional. i cannot stress enough how this film is so ahead of its time. themes discussed were still relevant. really great casting. the camera work, love it. the music. ryan cayabyab. genius. and what more can i say. rosanna roces, a fucking star. im a stan. she's mother to me.
