Now there’s some sad things known to man, but ain’t too much sadder than.... the tears of a clown...
Paul Leni’s german expressionist-lite adaptation of a victor hugo novel is super sad and messed up, as you might expect.
The “man who laughs”, Gwynplaine, has his mouth permanently locked in a hideous toothy smile thanks to evil child traffickers who give their human cargo plastic surgery to make them look freakier, because they sell for lots of money as court jesters and carnies that way. OK, that’s messed up though.
And Gwynplaine grows up to be an emotional wreck of a man, who could blame him?…
