Although Betsy turns Rollo down, he still opts to go on the cruise that he intended as their honeymoon. Not the Flight of the Navigator prequel I would have made, but it does work on its own terms.
The shot of Keaton emerging onto the shore in a diving suit is so fucking iconic. Were any of his contemporaries as eager to put themselves in harm’s way for art’s sake? To realize that he influenced everything from King Kong to 2001 to Triangle of Sadness is staggering.
I didn't know Captain Phillips was a remake. There are also hints of Titanic and The Lord of the Rings. Ripping off Buster Keaton is always a good idea.

An entertaining movie which is about a rich Buster Keaton trying to marry the daughter of a wealthy shipowner. Her father was going to sell a warship for a country which was in war with another one, it might be England 🏴 vs Germany 🇩🇪, then the disaster begins.
It has great gags and it’s a good way to spend 59 minutes of your life.

It was inevitable that anything would feel like a step down after making one of the greatest films of all-time with Sherlock, Jr., but Buster Keaton still manages to make something that I had a really nice time with just because it's really cute and fun! While Buster Keaton's The Navigator is arguably more feverish than it is humorous, there are nonetheless several choice comic interludes together with plenty of carefully planned and executed physical stuntwork.
After a few minor catastrophes together with a misreading of a dock number, the film observes Rollo Treadway (Keaton) and Betsy O'Brien (Kathryn McGuire), a neighbour who has just refused his marriage proposal. The central premise sees the two characters independently finding themselves trapped on a boat, the Navigator, unmanned and set adrift.

Buster Keaton’s most commercially-successful film is...fine? The jokes, stunts, and story all pale in comparison to previous (and, presumably, later) efforts, and the racism of the third act makes it pretty difficult to enjoy or recommend. It’s completely serviceable, but doesn’t hold a candle to a lot of Keaton’s other work.

I don't think this is close to the best Buster Keaton film I've seen - for a film as short as it is, it takes far too long to get going. There are a lot of great gags though, everything that took place underwater with Buster in the diving gear had me howling.
cannibal stereotypes aside (and that's a big aside ofc ofc), this was hilarious i'm sorry. it also gave us sailor outfit buster and beanie buster. and buster trying to boil eggs (!!)
