A part of me accepts that, yes, this is gross exploitation. Fulci is not an enlightened soul, and what he depicted here is carnal, weird, and violent in a manner that is anything but sympathetic, humane, or nurturing. But another part of me looks at things like that video of a woman getting catcalled for ten hours in New York and thinks that maybe Fulci was just depicting something honest. Note how the violence against women in this film aren't just from one fucked up weirdo, but from men everywhere. Every man in this film is depicted as at the least sexually obsessed and at most a sex offender. The detective's frequenting of a sex worker is the least sexist…
So sleazy, so violent, so unapologetic, and exactly why I love Fulci and Italian horror. This one pushes the envelope even for 80’s European trash cinema and I can absolutely see why some people loathe this It’s not meant to be pretty so if that’s something you look for in a movie then fucking swerve bitch. Personally, I eat this kind of shit up but to each his own, right?
What I love the most is the way Fulci paints NYC as the absolute epicenter of sordid degradation and I’m sorry but I find that appealing as hell.
Just kidding, what I really love the most is the fact that uses a totally unlicensed Donald Duck and accompanying voice in what may be the most anti-Disney movie possible.
Sicko scuzz filth exploitation murder grime from Fulci and it’s one hell of a doozy... festering with hyper sleaze pervoids, toe rape, sexhouse shows, and a brutal killer with a penchant slicing nipples with razors as well as Donald Duck quacks. The New York Ripper feels like a giallo and a slasher film had an all nighter plow fest in the pungent garbage juice at the bottom of a filthy nyc dumpster, the kind of unapologetic metropolitan ultra violence nightmare that only a maniac like Fulci could concoct.
Not much more in could add that others haven’t, so I’ll just end on this... find me a better movie that opens with a freeze frame on a dog with a severed, decomposed hand in its mouth while the credits play.
I’ll wait.
This sicko movie is a sleazoid cesspool vomitorium and I love it—exploitation filth royalty.
Fulci Lives.
a movie where a misogynist pervert who quacks like a duck gets off on cutting eyeballs and nipples open with razor blades. fulci was an absolute madman
Almost accidentally sex positive in its insistence on casting everybody, innocent and guilty alike, as a soaking wet pervert. The only person who doesn’t at some point swallow deeply while wiping sweat from their brow is a terminally ill child.
I admired Fulci’s restraint here. Strange thing to say about a movie where you see a head explode like a clay pot and a nipple get cut in half but those are climaxes that you have to lustily build to. Absolutely disgusting. Unclear to me if Fulci was medically horny or a Salvador Dalí “no touching” guy. I’m along for the ride either way and I guess it’s none of my business but it feels sometimes like he’s making it my business.
Once again the Greek man takes the fall for society’s woes. Same old story.
This currently has a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, which proves that site is utter garbage. This may just be a new favorite giallo for me. It has all of the slick style you'd expect from the genre, set against the seedy, filth-encrusted backdrop of New York. And, while I prefer Fulci's more surreal, supernatural output, I adored the absolutely vicious kills and amped-up sleaze factor in this, as well as the heartbreakingly downbeat ending. And the gore effects were exquisite.
It might be fun to pair this with Don't Torture a Duckling, for an evening of duck-themed giallo fun.
And, as filthy as the subject matter is, the 4k version is pristine and looks phenomenal.
filthy!! sleazy!! i will never not love porno times square or vintage new york subway stations in movies. watched alone at like midnight when roommates were out and honestly i was fockin scared...
Michelle's first movie choice has this Sunday starting off with a BANG!
This is a very mean spirited giallo. Here we have Fulci probably at his most nihilistic. There are some all around nasty people populating this flick.
It contains amazing gore, with lots of blood and the obligatory Fulci eye scene.
My memory hardly ever retains who the killer is in these movies, so it was almost as if seeing this for the first time.
In a way this is a great snapshot of a NY that doesn't exist anymore.
Not for the squeamish.
The very first kill scene in Fulci's 1982 giallo/slasher is like a perfect microcosm of Italian Horror Excess.
The cheeky woman on the ferry, vandalizing the inside windshield of a car, is plunged into doom as the killer confronts her and the camera closes in.
She screams - then we cut back to the ferry, gliding slowly across the water. All signs point to death, this has been communicated to the audience with little room for doubt.
In any other horror film, we'd expect the next shot to be some unlucky stranger finding her corpse, or the police meandering over their bare scraps of evidence thus far. But no... Fulci brings us back into that front seat where we then…
My personal dark horse candidate for Fulci's best: a near unbearably mean spirited assault by a city on every woman who lives there, as Lucio paints a portrait of an NYC practically fueled by sleaze and suffering. Easy to understand why this is so often labeled as "misogynistic", as the male cruelty is laid on quite thick, and it's always tough to tell whether Fulci is getting off on any of it (my take: he most certainly is, just look at those orgasmic fountains of gore), but the disreputable auteur's formal grace is at an all time high, even as numerous gorgeous models are tied to wooden bedposts, beaten and then gouged (the "nipple torture/eye slash" finale is positively disgusting).…
Although Fulci is no stranger to the slasher genre (after all, the "giallo" genre by default draws a lot from it) this is arguably one of the few where he leans more toward it. Also, while there are plenty of bloody deaths, in comparison to his earlier work, the kills are much more sanitized.
Fulci did an excellent job in capturing the filth and sleaze of New York in this movie, a city that from what I read was far from being the relatively clean place we know today. The contrast between the environment and the crime, and also some of the people portrayed, is really good. With plenty of sex and kinkiness, the film's dirty looking cinematography enhances the…
