Ninja Torakage, Torakage,
虎影 shows a different side of Japanese splatter master Yoshihiro Nishimura. At least on paper. This film is not just about severed limbs and fountains of blood. Instead, the focus will be on the adventures of a ninja. And yes, it does feel different somehow. Not quite as chaotic, not quite as bloody, not quite as wild as usual in the director's CV. But that doesn't mean that anything here is normal. The humor is still wacky, the characters not to be taken seriously and violence and sleaze all over the place. What I do like are the many nice individual ideas, the beautiful musical accompaniment and the generally handmade costumes, sets and effects, which are somewhere between ridiculous and…
I've wanted to watch this film for years, but the only English subtitles I could find were incomprehensible machine translated garbage. I think it's fair to say that a ninja movie directed by Japan's splatter king, featuring an evil Eihi Shiina, is objectively the most exciting prospect in cinema... so why no English-friendly release?
Still, this made it a great test case for github.com/machinewrapped/gpt-subtrans, a new translation tool that uses ChatGPT. The big difference with e.g. Google Translate is that it understands what it is reading, building up context as it goes.
With a comprehensible translation (now on OpenSubtitles) the film is revealed as a another Nishimura banger. There's way less of his trademark arterial spray than you might expect,…
''I gave my wife rub Moony poo.''
Full disclosure: There's no official English release, so I watched this one with subtitles Google Translated from Chinese.
I'm not sure if that improved the film or hurt it, but it sure as hell made for a hilarious viewing experience.
A weird little film, The Ninja War of Torakage is part Lone Wolf & Cub, part Owl's Castle, part Tokyo Gore Police, but unfortunely lacks its influences' necessary elegance.
The film's biggest issue is about 30 minutes in the middle, where it becomes a silly, dull mess of CGI comedy.
It's all the more grating when compared to the more self-serious first hour and the film's genuinely enderaring climax, both of which are great.…
Torakage is great fun & filled with super charged ninja action that will get your pulse rate up. But Torakage isn't all fluff, and can stir some deeper feelings regarding family, loyalty, and tradition. It was super exciting to see in the end credits that a second installment is to be expected, I would love this as a franchise! Highly recommended!
Surreal, zany Japanese quasi-historical movie with a ninja flick buried somewhere in the middle of it. For a while I thought I was going to be able to take it as a straightforward movie with occasional diversions into insanity, but I was wrong: insanity wins this one. Entertainingly so.
Something entirely different by gore mastermind Nishimura. Amazing cinematography compared to his previous work and some very funny music scenes. Gore is unfortunately taking a back burner here and the movie could used some more blood fountains. Still a fun ride

Day 8: Watch a film with special effects by Yoshihiro Nishimura
Did I follow the plot? Not at all. Were the action scenes sweet? Hell yes! Still the effects weren't as extreme or gory as Nishimura's horror films.
The Ninja War of Torakage was a very enjoyable experience that made me think that Yoshihiro Nishimura is more than just a person who specializes in gore and the film ends with a great “To Be Continued” tag, which I will eagerly wait for a sequel.
