  idk I might be reaching but I found a lot of this to be pretty reminiscent of the most inventive French new wave pictures. Reminded me a lot of Truffaut’s early works. Feels old fashioned yet totally new and inventive (some of the camerawork reminded me of Birdman era Iñárritu). Explores some pretty powerful themes whilst also offering impressive commentary on the Christmas season. A future classic perhaps??

  The Nutcracker Sweet (2015) is a South American animation film which has some good ideas, but simply doesn't have the resources to realize them. There are few aspects of the animation that's good, but 90% of it is too economical ruining the experience.

  I've never seen a movie where so much and so little happens. How did it butcher the classic nutcracker story by adding and removing stuff all over the place? why did they give us vital information in that hard-to-follow storybook function. i kept waiting for it to become the classic nutcracker but it never happened. the models were HORRIBLY uncomfortable to look at. the kids had such weirdly detailed teeth and the nutcracker's mouth was too big to be a non-hinged mouth. He looked like a sleep paralysis demon. Hated this so fucking much

  Tchaikovsky's ballet gets another terrible adaptation in the seasonal equivalent to Foodfight - the animation here looks absolutely horrendous, even by the standards of cheap CGI fare. This looks like a film that was made 15 years ago, right down to countless moments of slow motion and bullet time for no reason whatsoever, other than to appeal to kids. The comparisons to Foodfight aren't helped by the presence of Edward Asner, who voices a clockwork owl who provides random exposition dumps, who probably wanted to get paid just as much as Alicia Silverstone and Drake Bell did to appear in this rubbish. Needless to say, the story is only very loosely adapted, and by the second half gives up completely…
