  Took a couple of weeks to see because it just opened up in Canada where I am right now.

  Really impressed by the supporting cast, who aren't getting any attention with this film -- Casey Affleck, Tom Waits, Danny Glover, Keith Carradine, Elizabeth Moss and great character actors such as Gene Jones.

  Lowery truly captures that era with the style. Almost every shot feels like it was photographed in 1981. LOVE Joe Anderson's cinematography and Scott Kuzio's production design.

  at many points, The Old Man and the Gun seems more like a love letter than a film. it’s a love letter dedicated, of course, to Robert Redford, and this is most apparent in a warm montage that is both about Forrest Tucker and Redford. it is charming in the way it both marvels and mourns the passing of time. there’s no obvious sadness, but surely there’s a quiet resistance, opposing the inevitable valiantly yet futilely.

  Lowery’s style also just really fucking stirs me—where there would otherwise be dialogue, meaningful or not, he let his characters sit in silence. where the score might tell you how to feel, he lets the quiet flood the scene, so that you’re really In…

  No vanity project this self-conscious should be this pleasurable. The fact that Redford allows this to be about not just his farewell to screen life and his own work’s pleasures, but about all the ways we humans find pleasure: in our children, our spouses, our work, our friends and coworkers, our animals, our homes, our stories.

  The most impressive feat Lowery manages with Old Man is just how little of it feels like embarrassingly overt pastiche. It’s all there, of course; the Butch Cassidy font, the 70s pans/zooms, and the lush 16mm film. Yet the writing is delightfully laid-back and beyond a few saccharine miscalculations (a wistful Spacek looking over her farm at sunset and saying “keep on keeping on” comes to mind) is free from the kind of winking that would sink a worse version of this. Instead we’re treated to a series of breezy heist/cat-and-mouse montages and a lowkey, conversational charm that are combined to hammer home the idea of how great a feeling it is to love what you do.

  If someone told me that Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek were married in real life, I would believe it with all my heART. Their connection on screen was so great, it made me wish I was 50 years older.

  This film is definitely one of those crime movies where I don't know whether to root for the cop or the robber. Like Redford's performance makes me want to rob a bank yet Affleck's performance makes me want to catch a robber? I don't know. I'll just rob a bank and catch myself doing it or something.

  P.S: The scene where Detective Hunt and Tucker are shown together on screen for the first time is so nerve wrecking yet so amazing, I loved every second of it.
