I’ve had a complicated relationship with this movie for more than half my life, as a child it frightened me, and in my teen years I had a friend named Damien who my group of friends and I would always say “ITS ALL FOR YOU DAMIEN!” in jest during some of the best years of our lives. He was a swell pal with a very troubled life and in a sick twist of fate he hung himself shortly after highschool so I only ran into this movie a few times since then, and despite always digging it I kept my distance for obvious reasons.

On the tails of The Exorcist, Richard Donner made a similar religious horror piece starring an older Gregory Peck, and it’s pretty fun for the most part!
I struggled with the rating here because I really liked the first hour and the last 10 minutes, but there’s a good chunk of the second half I don’t care for AT ALL! Gregory Peck does not need to travel back to Italy for 30 minutes, to learn about the origins of this curse. That being said, watching this man figure out he has a devil child is a good time.
Richard Donner is pretty underrated as far as directors go. He’s got a de Palma-like flair for the dramatic, especially apparent in the tricycle scene. He was the go to studio director of the 70s but put a lot of his own personal style into his films.

One amongst the cycle of demonic child films which started with Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby & scaled new heights with William Friedkin's The Exorcist, The Omen may not be as great as those two horror classics but it's still one of the most memorable chillers to come out from the 1970s & even today, its sinister atmosphere manages to work remarkably well for the most part when compared to its counterparts.

very solid performances, lush score and pretty effective shock kills but donner's flatly realistic and classy approach to this material (which is already a bit overlong) kinda kneecaps it. reliably handsomely-made in that way you could count on movies from the 70s to look of course but at a certain point it needed to drop the drab elegance and expository, episodic procedural stuff and get genuinely hysterical/hellish/exploitative, especially if you want to sell a climax that involves gregory peck getting perversely and subjectively swept up in the idea of murdering a child. as sturdy a as it is, the actual filmmaking just doesn’t reflect headspace ever. so as far as chilly, paranoid post-exorcist supernatural horror dramas go i guess i'd…
every time gregory peck answers the phone in this movie he looks so startled as if he’s a time traveler who just transported to the seventies from the 1700s and has no idea what phones are but is trying to act cool so he doesn’t blow his cover.
