15-episode western serial from Universal starring Johnny Mack Brown leading a wagon train to Oregon with a influential man sabotaging their trip across the uncivilized lands. 5 hours of continuous riding, shooting and screwjobs gets a bit repetitive, but by all means this was action-packed! And Fuzzy Knight was a good personality to have with us that time. Same can be said about young Bill Cody Jr. in what might have been one of his most demanding roles of his limited career. The trio combination works well enough for this to always have a changing dynamic.
A typical Universal serial with the wonderful Johnny Mack Brown as the main draw. Like most serials from the studio, it is loaded with stock footage from Westerns going back to the silent era.

I love the old chapterplays, even the crummy ones. I've seen most of the serials from the beginning of the talkie era, to the mid-50's, when the serials were among the various short subjects which gradually faded away.
This one is from Universal, which produced comparatively lavish serials that often lacked memorable characters or original situations. This one would probably appeal more to me if I particularly liked John Mack Brown, who is perfectly adequate, but failed to engage me with the plot. I actually liked Fuzzy Knight (the comical sidekick) better, which is unusual. I also found myself rooting for Charles Stevens's henchman character, for some reason...which works against enjoying the story on its own terms.
