  !WARNING!

  Do not attempt to watch ‘The Other Lamb’ without the following:

  (1) Uncomfortable chair
  (1) Bright room
  (8) Hours of sleep (in the last 12 hours)
  (1) Pot of coffee
  (2) Energy drinks 
  (1) Gram of cocaine 

  The first hour is comprised entirely of walks, stares and menstruation (apparently this would make a good double feature with ‘Saint Frances’).

  The last half hour sees some minimal plot develop between long shots of staring, walking and menstrual blood.

  Surprisingly, not recommended for insomnia due to random scenes of high pitched screaming.

  Some really bad stuff but I no longer care because I had to sit thru all that staring singing and walking

  If it wasn’t for the really cool looking cinematography and trees this would be graded even lower...some cool shots I won’t deny that

  I‘m going through my list and just finished watching this slow-burn drama with horror overtone. Raffey Cassidy stars as Selah, a girl born into an all-female cult with a male leader Shepard played by Michiel Huisman, who starts to feel uncertainty about his teachings. Terrifically acted by Cassidy and Huisman (The Invitation, The Haunting on Hill House). There were a lot of characters with barely any development. An exposition character who helped filled-in some of the gaps in the story. They randomly injected dreamlike imageries that weren't translated well. Very slow-paced, ambiguous, and unsettling. And what’s with all the string decors? Were there any meaning behind them, or were they there for aesthetic reasons? Everything was gorgeously shot with a beautiful backdrop. The ending reminded me of Hunter Hunter, it’s grim but not at the same level. It’s an attractive-looking film, however, it feels like a chunk of the story was missing. I thought it was still an all-right watch.

  What have we learned here? If you want to make a film about women systematically deprived of their agency, try not to give them any. Or names, if you can avoid it. There's a story here about a woman who has long lived with the consequences of these acts that's not told, in favor of a pretty standard one we've seen a dozen times before.

  A beleaguered examination of adolescence and of power and control being accomplished through fear are negotiated in this warped tale about a bizarre religious order populated by all females, except for the male leader known merely as the Shepherd. Written by C.S. McMullen and directed by Małgorzata Szumowska, the English-language debut for the acclaimed Polish filmmaker, The Other Lamb unfolds mainly around the character of Selah, a girl on the periphery of puberty and the general mistreatment handed out by the cult leader.

  There's some stunning cinematography from Michal Englert of the Irish highlands that contain some aesthetically ambitious imagery to accentuate the foreboding, and the narrative excavates aspects in play beyond Shepherd’s volatile personality and from the female flock living off the land inhabiting structures decorated with pagan markings. The film manages to maintain its brooding atmosphere, and there's an ample amount of haunting imagery and some terrific framing together with a spectacular sound design by Ben Baird.

  Yet another indie movie with barely enough story for a short film/music video that was made into a feature film regardless. Padded with pretty shots and dream sequences, it gets boring and tiresome really fast. There are few directors out there who can make an intriguing film mostly relying on atmosphere, but Małgorzata Szumowska is not one of them. Also if you are going to feature scenes of abuse, you better have a good movie surrounding them to justify their existence, and that chick sure doesn't.

  Raffey Cassidy delivers good performance, but we don't know much about the character she is playing, so it's very difficult to be intrigued or even remotely interested by her story. Michiel Huisman, who was…
