  So I am genuinely as surprised as anyone reading this with my score. As I said last night in my review for 1917, I love War films (if they are well-made). I will admit that this movie is a bit sloppy at moments. The “style” of it feels a bit jumbled at points, as we are being introduced to (literally) every character. There is a sentimentality in that, and it’s nice to see, but we could have done without certain elements. I also needed to see some more character-depth.   A very boots-on-the-ground perspective -- and I have little doubt of its authenticity, which is admirable -- robs this of a lot of nuance, and representationally it's...let's say less than ideal. But its clean formal economy goes a long way to making a successful lower-budget LONE SURVIVOR. Last hour is front-to-back action, suitably harrowing despite a lot of dodgy computer VFX, but in the end this retreats to standard pictures-of-the-real-guys stuff (in which you learn that Orlando Bloom played a 27-year-old). Eastwood's boy is doing a pretty good Eastwood.

  Well, color me surprise. But even with its 92% on RT, I didn't expect to stumble a little war film that gets better and better as it progress, evolving and adding all this different layers and conclude in a way that just hit you as these films should.

  The Outpost is intense. The action is brutal, and the story is real. My bad for sleeping on this film for so long. 

  The climatic battle is straight up chaos. You don’t realize sometimes you have to fight without your combat gear or the desperate need for ammunition. Also, you might have to throw a smoke grenade, to try to give you cover, so you can attempt to save your wounded friend. 

  War is pure hell, and The Outpost doesn’t sugarcoat it one bit. It is a tough watch, but it is also a damn good action / war movie. Get on it, if you haven’t seen it.

  Rod Lurie’s retelling of The Battle of Kamdesh was not exactly the cheesy, straight-to-VOD war movie I was expecting. It’s actually an occasionally exhilarating and well-directed film with a gut-punch of a finale that just suffers from a lackluster opening hour. I think Lurie‘s film surprises with some immersive tracking shots that thrust you alongside these soldiers as they endure hardship after hardship and a physical lead performance from Caleb Landry Jones (quite honestly some of his best work yet) that’s at the core of the film. The Outpost is definitely nothing groundbreaking, but it’s still a lot more interesting than you may expect and overall a pretty solid watch.

  Sometimes a movie starts off on the wrong foot and just begs you to hate it. In the first 10 minutes of ‘The Outpost’ we are introduced to what feels like 1500 characters and locations...each with their name splattered across the screen. These are solders and places on an army base...each face and space looking identical to one another.

  None of this shit matters.  

  Of course I know this is based on a true story and many of these real soldiers lost their lives. But don’t front-load all this data in the first few scenes! I will learn who these people are over the next two hours, and there is real impact at the end when they do honor…
