In the midst of below average reviews, I come out pleasantly surprised by my level of enjoyment here. Harry Melling was exceptional. It’s hard for an actor to stand out on his own while acting alongside one of the greats in Christian Bale, but Harry took control and mesmerized me.
The film itself was haunting, dark, and eerie. Tim Burton vibes if you were to remove the quirks and quips of a typical Tim Burton picture.
There was definitely a decent movie in here. Very interesting plot and a beautiful production. The atmosphere and setting was five stars. So dreary and cold. I’m probably lucky I saw this in the cinema because it’s a bit slow and would have been hard to focus watching on Netflix.
Kids, if ever you start to think “hey, maybe being a full-time writer could be a sustainable career”, just remember that even Edgar Allen Poe had to join the fuckin Army.

There is only so far having great production and costume design can take you. Overly long, monotone and pretty uninspired. Harry Melling was great, though.
A serial killer saga that’s set along the frozen banks of the Hudson River during the winter of 1830, Scott Cooper’s “The Pale Blue Eye” may be too frigid to thaw out the full potential of its premise, but this well-furnished Netflix whodunnit still has some fun tapping into the cleverest aspect of the Louis Bayard novel from which it’s been adapted: If a young Edgar Allen Poe were involved in solving a series of murders, it would only be a matter of time before everyone started to suspect that he was behind them.

Now I'm an old soul and I do like my period pieces, and my mother instilled in me a love for detective procedurals, however here on Letterboxd I have learned a new word and I think it applies here: mid.
Mid because although it has great performances from its star-studded cast, the ever-dark cinematographic filter and various tropes of the story - including one of two endings which thinks it's a good twist but is just an improperly overused motive revealed late - are nothing new. You know, like... mid.
