Fine film of the love affair and marriage of Andrew Jackson and Rachel Donelson Robards might not be entirely factual but is highlighted by a beautiful Susan Hayward performance.
Based on the Irving Stone's bestseller the film covers the couples event filled lives. Due to a misunderstanding about the status of a youthful marriage, which they thought had ended, their first marriage was invalid. A minor matter now but at the time she was scorned and vilified, branded an adulteress something that haunted the couple the rest of their days.
Hayward and Heston work so well together it's a pity this was their only co-starring picture. Susan's innate warmth thaws out the sometimes stiff Heston and they really suggest the great love the pair shared. The film has an effective musical score which sets the proper feeling for each scene. Have tissues handy during the latter part of the film.
