  What an absolute travesty that the Armenian Genocide is still unacknowledged by the Turkish government. I'm so glad this movie exists to shed light on this terrible tragedy, even if the film itself is fictional. It's not perfect, but its importance cannot be overstated - watch it!

  i am 1/4th armenian on my dad’s side; my great grandmother, hranoush “helen” jara-hian, who escaped the armenian genocide, died when i was seven. her father and brothers were killed by turkish soldiers, and her baby brother died of starvation during the escape. only she and her mother and sister made it to america. i’ve only read her journals once when i was younger, but i’ve been told the general story enough times to have the imagery of it burned in my mind. i didn’t grow up immersed in this culture, i wasn’t around any armenian community, it was all just this one story.

  I appreciate that “The Promise” exists for one reason in particular. Try asking any random person on the street in this country if they ever heard of the Armenian Genocide. Hell, see if anyone can tell you the approximate geographic location of the former Ottoman Empire. Or give you a ballpark estimate of when it ceased to exist. Countless stories of harrowing atrocities have been buried thanks to far-reaching propaganda efforts or by the depressing reality that there are just too damn many throughout some of the darkest periods in history to keep track of.
