One of the most gripping movies I've ever watched
Everything is shown with such intricacy and detail, the ideology, the thrill, everything to the point. The direction from Mira Nair is brilliant. Plus Rizwan Ahmad is one hell of an actor.

The September 11 attacks, often referred to as 9/11, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Wahhabi terrorist group Al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries, and substantial long-term health consequences, in addition to at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.
Consequently, since the year 2001 stats statistics collected by the FBI have shown an increase in hate crimes perpetrated towards Muslim individuals (jumping from 28 to 481 reported incidents in the year following 9/11) and these particular incidents are now the second…
my god this film has a giant plot hole in its centre. I have trouble believing that every character in this film wasn't trying to get into Riz Ahmed's pants. Unrealistic! Unfathomable! Even Kate Hudson had to imagine someone else while fucking him. Absurd! That man's jawline can slice a hard cheese for goodness sake.
I promise I actually have intelligent things to say about this very good film but I'm back at uni tomorrow, we are in lockdown here again, and I'm clearly horny on main.
You think you're the only person who's experienced injustice firsthand? Throw a rock out there anywhere in this city, and it'll land on the grave of someone who's seen worse than you. Now maybe you're having some kind of a breakdown. I will see to it that you will get some rest after this is done. But you will treat my commitment to you with the respect that it deserves!
Do you want to be an insurance salesman with a mortgage and a migraine? Is that the life you envision for yourself? You put your fucking shoes on, you go down to that office, and you do the job you were hired to do!
A throwback to when Kiefer Sutherland…
One of those movies where I intended to read the book but never got round to it. Bonus, this is a star turn from Riz Ahmed who elevates what is otherwise, a bit of a slog.
The story approaches some thorny ideas with a somewhat rote attitude. It spins its wheels for great tracts of it's running time which becomes frustrating given there is an urgency to the immediate action. Riz and his beautiful doe eyes are consistently compelling though. He's so lovely...
On another note, I keep saying (to anyone who would listen) that Riz would make an excellent Bond and I stand by that. But, I read an interview where he said, after completing Venom, he didn't really…
A powerful perfomance by Riz Ahmed (one of this generation's most underrated actors) isn't enough to boost this film aspirations of being a powerful social commentary towards discrimination and prejudice. It is a film that does just enough in my opinion, sticking to the already known tropes of drama.
Good intentions, stellar leading turn from Riz as per usual, but a bit all over the place finally and Mira Nair’s direction never feels quite at home with the admittedly quite tricky narrative.
Marking a strong collaboration between director Mira Nair and writer William Wheeler that would prove itself strong again with Disney's Queen of Katwe, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is an intricate, incredibly well-acted, and emotionally investing drama about one man's pursuit of the American Dream torn apart by the horrors of 9/11 and its aftermath.
Part of my 5 Directors x 5 Unseen Films (9) challenge.
My. Oh my. What a change of pace for director Mira Nair. She's still focused on cross-cultural themes, but she's gone from weddings and romance to hard-hitting politics. And set against the backdrop of New York City post-9/11, she makes sure that everyone is emotionally invested in the story. Oh my.
Based upon the 2007 best-seller by Mohsin Hamid, the story takes place in 2011 in Lahore, Pakistan, where American professor Anse Rainier (Gary Richardson) has been kidnapped, with the perpetrators demanding the release of 690 detainees from a Muslim concentration camp plus a ransom. Posing as a journalist, CIA operative Bobby Lincoln (Liev Schreiber) is sent to interview…
