Bloody, brutal, tasteless... fucking loved it obviously. THAT's what I call a pandemic film. THAT'S the way you close out a festival. Shades of Cat III gnarliness in all the glorious practical effects, lunatic grins and dismembered body parts. For anyone who thought Busan was good but too sentimental, this is your jam. First time director Rob Jabbaz, you hit it out the park my man. A proper horror film for proper horror fans.
And that brings FrightFest 2021 to a close. Had a blast! Saw some gems (and lot of shite of course, but that's par for the course), made some new friends (shout out to Eric and Andy!), survived the seventh circle that is Leicester Square and thoroughly enjoyed the first festival experience in the cinema since the world went to hell in a handbasket. I can appreciate making a movie like this where the idea is to be such a viscerally nihilistic reaction to the pandemic and society’s response to it, but this is worthless edgelord fake-provocative garbage. I’m down with splatter movies and even sexual provocation intertwined with violence (I love HELLRAISER!) but this is the product of someone just seeing how “fucked up” and “depraved” they can get with nothing to actually say about any of it. I left the Q&A after the director started talking about how he wasn’t interested in the politics of the film and was more focused on the “fun and the gore”, a funny thing to say for a movie with so much grotesque sexual violence. Worst I’ve seen at Fantastic Fest.
I heard a lot good praise early on but wasn’t interested because I didn’t want to see another zombie but when I heard it is rabies instead of the walking dead it peaked my interest. When I heard it is inspired by the comic book Crossed which I am a fan I had to see it. I really enjoyed this movie while watching it. It didn’t take long for it to get bat shit crazy. Ich war wohl etwas zu erwartungsfroh. Das Gerede vom „brutalsten Zombiefilm seit Jahren“ macht mit mir wenig - PR-Gewäsch wie dieses macht sich vielleicht als roter Sticker auf dem BluRay-Cover ganz gut oder als Headline auf dem Poster, für mich hat sich das zu häufig als leere Phrasendrescherei herausgestellt. The Sadness got quite a lot of media buzz in Germany during 2020 and 2021. Advertised as the most shocking and disturbing zombie movie of all time, it was supposed to be as graphic as "A Serbian Film" or Hong Kong Category III films. Then something even more surprising happened. For whatever reason, the uncut version of the movie got quite a big cinema rollout, despite failing the FSK rating three times and not having a age rating during the rollout.
