As Jean-Luc Godard famously never said: “All you need for a movie is a girl and a great white shark.” “The Shallows” presupposes is that adding a cute seagull, a rotting whale, and a few GoPro cameras to the mix probably doesn’t hurt. Unequivocally the best shark movie since “Jaws” (yes, even better than “Open Water” and “Deep Blue Sea”), this back-to-basics thriller either eliminates or reclaims all of the excess and gimmickry that have watered down the genre since Steven Spielberg first invented it — there’s only one killer fish, she’s shot in beautiful 2D, and it doesn’t appear as though the beast has developed the ability to swim backwards as the result of reckless genetic modifications. Jaume Collet-Serra's filmography is one built out of double take genre films; a collection of slashers and junk-food action pictures which, at first glance, seem predictable until their formally precise movements and images come out into the forefront. Collet-Serra understands the very idea of creating a smooth, elegant thriller without succumbing to unrefined cliches or cheap tricks. His camera is tranquil until it's not, a matter of tension over unnecessary variation within the frame, and the overall experience is classical in the most seamless sense. On the other side of the spectrum, characters are just as important in a Collet-Serra film, with side performers influencing the main journey of the protagonist whether they're in or out of the film's…

We know so frighteningly little about the ocean. Hands down, the best shark-themed film (that I've seen) since 1975. The practical effects are fantastic, the CGI is great too, and Blake Lively gives a very good performance, pretty much carrying the entire film on her own. But what impresses me most, and what The Shallows does more proficiently than most creature features, is make you fear the space, not just the monster. The shark is scary enough, but Collet-Serra does such a wonderful job injecting fear into every inch of the blue that it inhabits. It makes you think: if these are the entities that inhabit the shallows, if these events can transpire along the surface, what sorts of horrors are gliding through the deep?
