As far as I'm aware, this was the Gunny's only lead role in a film. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Brian Trenchard-Smith works his trashy magic here. The actual siege sequences beat a lot of bigger budget efforts.
Despite it's low budget and B-Movie War film trappings, there's a surprising sensitivity to this war actioner. Unlike just about all of the 'Nam war films I've seen, there's some efforts to humanize the Viet Cong. The final moments show that R. Lee Ermey had some real acting talent despite being mostly known for barking orders and having a penchant for creative insults.
On a final note, this features the most dramatic and (almost hilariously) emotional example of someone being shot in the nuts I think I've seen in a otherwise serious film.
