Talk about movies you will not forget having seen them a decade ago, well, this is a perfect example.
A truly mesmerizing experience, which gets more and more uncomfortable as it progresses.
Forget the slashers with axes, true horror, that's surgeons with scalpels.
Dios mio.
Dios fucking mio.
Pardon my Spanish, but this film just knocked the wind out of me. Almodovar is one messed up genius and he pushes the boat out here with this wonderfully bizarre fairytale.
It is a fairytale in so far that it deals with real life themes but puts them in a larger than life setting. And larger than life it is. It is very difficult to write anything about this film without spoiling the plot so I won't as I feel this film is best enjoyed if you go in cold.
There is a small danger in that as I found the first half hour or so unbelievably cold and distant. And while this tone never…
Starts out with the images being almost hypnotic! This movie is beautifully shot! The story sneaks up on you! It is twisted on so many different levels! Give it a try!
this is so insanely fucked up. it also looks so gorgeous and i love the score. it is my deepest held belief that movies should make us feel horrified and bad
I am reminded of Kim Jee-woon's I Saw the Devil and Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, as they are similar in that each film presents a character who is cruelly inhuman, and gives us reason to root for their psychopathic revenge. Robert is an unwholesome character. The feelings of others mean nothing to him. That he expresses them on the rich canvas of Almodovar lends them a convincing beauty, but he is rotten to the core. When the film ends and we finally understand the depth of his depravity, it's like a punch in the face; I can imagine absolutely hating this film, but apparently I love getting punched in the face.
Whoa... I knew nothing about this movie going in other than it existed, featured Antonio Banderas, and the poster reminded me of Eyes Without a Face—I had no idea this would be a body horror psychological Hitchcockian revenge melodrama fusion with impeccable set design, costumes, and music.
A whirlwind of a film.
Even though I had no clue what to expect I still found myself utterly surprised by what was unfolding before me. Here we have hyper realism paired with with dark and really disturbing content. The hyper realism actually makes this film even more disturbing, these two approaches to a story merge together as if they were one and the same. That seems like a simple approach but it is majorly majorly effective as what happens in this film is told in a way as if it were quite a normal topic for a thriller, slight spoiler what happens isn’t fucking normal.
I studied the wasp factory at A level and it’s one of my favourite…
it has all the components of a good movie, but it isn't
It's a good metaphor of gender dysphoria though: you're assigned a gender that you damn well know you can't identify with. Robert represents the force of social norms that try to shape you into a woman, while you aren't one, despite what people say about the body you inhabit.
Unnecessary and excessive use of sexual violence but good cinematography and acting. 2.25/5
I mention in almost all my Almodóvar reviews how he seems to always make movies that I should like but for whatever reason, I get let down to some degree. However, The Skin I Live in is exactly what I always think I’ll like about his films. This one works for me really well. It’s about as close to a horror movie without any scares as one can make. I found it incredibly interesting with one hell of a wild story that veers wildly into insanity.
The film does start a bit slow. It seems a bit basic on the surface and takes a while to set up a precedent for how it wants you to think of the characters.…
Solo voy a decir una cosa: De locos.
Al principio la cosa parece demasiado normal para ser de Almodóvar, luego... Plot twist abismal, la película mejora conforme avanza.
What a trama!
La he disfrutado mucho.
