Hidden gem. Watched on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Fun, adventurous, prison break buddy movie with a semi love story. A comical government official on their tails creates a fun movie. Based on a true story just adds pizzazz. I’d watch if I were you.
From my TIFF 1998 reviews, when the film had a different name:
THOSE DARING YEARS is a film from Spain about busting a couple of political prisoners out of the country during Franco's regime. Based on a true story, it's fun, but it's flawed. While they're not bad guys, the two central characters aren't quite sympathetic enough for us to care if they make it across the border into France, so that's a major problem. These two are too cavalier, and endanger the lives of the two girls, a Canadian and an American posing as tourists who come to rescue them.
More flaws include that the film is full of what's supposed to be hilarious bickering, but which gets tiresome fast, and a problem that plagues many fantastical stories, unbelievable coincidences.
This film isn't terrible, but it's maybe an unfortunate end to my festival screenings.
