  The Strange Thing About The Johnson’s has become a cultural phenomenon in a way. It blew up on Black Twitter years after its initial release due to the taboo nature of the film. Black families being portrayed in an incestuous light is not something seen often and thus this led to the film becoming a meme of sorts.

  Rewatching this while putting that cultural context aside I can see that this is a truly great film in the way it deals with not only taboo but regret, shame and how abusers manipulate. It’s also where I can see Asters love for tension, something that surrounds his 2018 film Hereditary.
