this film is a cry for help in a country of the deaf. the only kind of coming of age we can afford here
God has a beautiful plan. Remember that.
Had no idea this movie even existed until it popped up on Paul Schrader's list of the ten best films of the decade. (On which Paul put his own First Reformed at the number one spot. King shit right there.) Now that I've seen The Student, I wholly get why he loves this movie as much as he does. This is his "God's lonely man" type of storytelling as seen through the pessimistic filter of Russia. In a way, it's almost the anti-First Reformed. The Student examines the danger of extreme religious practice, yet not just that. It also ropes in topics like schooling, sex education, evolution, free speech, gender dynamics, parenting, homosexuality,…
Religious debate horror ecstasy
There is a constant counterbalance between the main characters biblical-based rebuttals and everyone else in his life. A hellish crescendo.
Definitely worth watching if you’re into heated debate, religious topics, horror, or psychology.

He's more like the antichrist than the disciple, but I'll bite. It looks like I've traded in Sad Boi for Angry Boi. Some vicious, satirical humour that honestly works. The Church of Lies, Hypocrisy and Convenient Inconsistencies. Director Kirill Serebrennikov is taking a hammer at ideologies prevailing in Russia. Science belongs in education.
Thanks for the log, legitinate!
When making a film about an anti-social, violent anti-hero, the most incendiary device is voice-over. Travis Bickle or Alex DeLarge without voiceover might just come across as incomprehensible thugs; with voiceover, you start to understand them, relate to them, if not exactly like them. I've chosen two canonical examples there because... well, because I haven't seen Joker yet and I don't know how well it squares up to its clear inspirations. But more importantly, I think both those films are great, and the voiceover helps make them great. Thinking about Taxi Driver and A Clockwork Orange without the voiceover is almost physically painful to me. But is the artistic triumph worth allowing the possibility that some people may relate too…
It's my birthday today and already 3 different people have told me that I should do or accomplish something in my life.
So I watched this film.
I mean I accomplished something didn't I?!
Honestly, still thinking about this one 5 days after I watched it, and that's a very good sign. It's not a perfect film, but it's fascinating. Would love to know how many people got offended by this one ))
★½ – did not like it
Exaggerated? Yes, but it opens a very interesting debate, and that debate doesn't have to do with religion, but with what it provokes due to the interpretations that each person has about it, and especially how they manipulate it according to their own mental state .
An astonishing, and timely, film that looks at the problems that can be caused by mistakenly giving equal space and time to the opinions of others when those opinions are fuelled by belief and passion, as opposed to facts. There are some strong central performances, but this is made riveting thanks to the main ideas at the heart of the plot.
