What an amazing find this was after browsing the foreign language movie aisle at my local library branch. I loved this little silly and weirdly engrossing movie.
Easily the best French comedy, Fantômas an obvious close second. Richard has incredible chemistry with every single of the other performers, as the story works around him to create such a light and quick paced story. A battle of wits with a poor violinist caught in the middle, Rochefort and Blier’s scenes have such great dialogue that makes their dynamic known instantly to the viewer, and Darc’s… well everything makes the film that much better. Cosma’s score is particularly notable, with his compositions always being appreciated, like in Rabbi Jacob. What a blast, especially to revisit after not seeing it for a while.
if you like to have a silly time? this is the movie for you! just being silly is all
200/366 for 2016
[Thanks, Hulu!]
Jacques Tati and Harold Lloyd had a doofy, sweet little baby that looks like LE SAMOURAÏ, and it's called THE TALL BLOND MAN WITH ONE BLACK SHOE. Espionage antics and an agile and ridiculous lead character make this film an oddly engrossing screwball comedy, equal parts goofy and lightly thrilling. The film utilizes plant & payoff techniques both for great humor and plot twistiness, weaving together quite gracefully. The performances are so perfectly straight, save for our lead, who's perfect at slapstick, screwball, and everything in between. Sometimes I struggle with films of this kind, but this one was a nice romp, even if it takes a little time to get going. Once it's going, boy does it go.
Best gun shot sound effects go to...
Aouch.
Hahaha 🤣
This cult French comedy was funnier than I expected 😆
You have more than three reasons to watch this, but here it goes --my three reasons, Criterion style:
1. The dry-humor take on Hitchcock spy thrillers a la North by Northwest.
2. Zamfir's flute playing throughout gives it a Spaghetti-Western/gangster (Leone-directed) movie flavor.
3. Last but not least, at all, Mireille Darc in that backless black dress! 😳🚬🔥🥵💘
If all that wasn't enough, you also have the worst live performance of Mozart ever on screen 😂
literally FUCK all of the james bond movies nothing comes close to 60-70s french spy action comedies
Mireille Darc is astonishingly beautiful. That’s all I’ve got to say at this point.
Comedy Tonight Challenge Film 48: original version of an American comedy remake
not laugh out loud funny, but a good enough time. also i don't think i'd ever seen a butt cleavage dress before, so thanks France!
Funny, but not thát funny...
It has some nice moments, but for me the movie missed on pacing and timing. It's a bit of a different style, slapstick mixed with a very dry humor. Reminded me a bit of the Monsieur Hulot movies. It also spoofs a bit french crime movie characters like Le Samouraï.
I enjoyed some gags, the lead actor Pierre Richard has a funny look and slapstick-like mannerisms. But the movie as a whole didn't work for me. It was lacking speed and real good punchline jokes. It all just flows by kinda casually and the plot doesn't make much sense.
It's about a random guy getting mixed up in a sceme between different police forces. And…
