Fängt im Jahr 4039 an. Dann gibt's eine Zeitreise und wir sind im Jahr 1988. Der Film wurde 1987 produziert. Fällt also ganz knapp ins gewünschte Muster.
In einer sehr weit entfernten Zukunft, im Jahre 4039 belagern Maschinenwesen genannt Jen-Diki die letzte noch existierende Stadt der Menschen und stehen kurz davor den Schutzschild zu durchbrechen. Um das zu verhindern, springt die Stadt in einen Zeittunnel um zu entkommen. Die Stadt kann aufgrund eines Vorfalls welcher beim Kampf zuvor geschah, nicht direkt am "gewünschten" Ort landen. Um den Landeplatz vorzubereiten, werden zwei Zeitwächter voraus geschickt um die nötigen Maßnahmen entsprechend einzuleiten.
Aber ganz so einfach ist dieses Unterfangen nicht, da die Jen-Diki ebenfalls der Zeitreise…

A dark, violent future, red-eyed robots on the rampage, time travel back to the 80's...yes, this sounds very familiar, doesn't it? One thing I didn't know - it has Carrie Fisher. Yes, 80's Carrie Fisher.
80's Carrie Fisher does not seem to be terribly invested, or awake. (80's Carrie Fisher might've needed a bit of a pick-me-up.) She has little to do anyway, spending much of the movie sidelined with an injury and ultimately getting fatally bear-hugged by a robot. This would not have discouraged 80's me, who would've been crushed to hear about this movie only to never find it available anywhere until the 2010's.
The movie around her is terrible, but it's also loaded with surprisingly good 80's…
The Terminator meets Aliens meets Mad Max, aber in halb so gut - und dennoch liebenswert.
It feels wrong seeing Carrie Fisher in a sci-fi movie that isn't Star Wars. This Ozploitation sci-fi time-traveling adventure is all over the place. Apparently, the finished product barely resembled the script, and there's certainly a good movie in there. I'm just not sure where or what it was, but Carrie Fisher and Dean Stockwell would surely be the two main characters. In fact, let's just have this be Fisher vs Stockwell one versus one in the Outback.
Aussie science fiction with a handful of good ideas and an indifferent execution.
A domed city on huge legs travels time, fleeing an army of cyborgs. An advance scouting party lands in Australia to prepare a fix when the city becomes damaged.
This looks fairly decent with mostly effective camera work and some cool sets and miniatures. The cyborgs are pretty sweet looking but are clumsy and nearly immobile.
A drugged up Carrie Fisher looks baffled by the proceedings and Dean Stockwell (RIP) is embarrassed.
This could have been cool but falls apart repeatedly. It's too cheap to be memorable but offers some shitty fun.

Slipstream (1989) and The Time Guardian are proof of Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher's downward career trajectory, post Return of the Jedi. If you saw these two films and found out they had to carry the gravitas in The Last Jedi, you would not be confident. But, it really just shows how responsible the director of a film is. At least, Slipstream seemed more of an original film in concept & execution. The Time Guardian is just a blatant rip-off of The Terminator and Aliens.
There aren't many positive things to say about this sci-fi ozploitation. The story and characters are cringeworthy and lack any personality. How you react to the first image of Dean Stockwell on screen might be emblematic of…
WOW!! This film is truly awesome. It's a flashy, explosive scifi adventure with quite an epic feel. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it.
It is largely influenced by "The Terminator" in terms of story and visuals, even down to the score, but that doesn't matter. The action is spectacular, the visual effects are brilliant, and the cyborg enemies throughout the film are truly badass. Imagine if Dr Who's Cybermen came from Hell, and you have a pretty good idea of how they look. It is directed with a lot of style and passion, great camerawork, great use of location, and runs along at a fast pace. The performances are good too, with a genuine chemistry between the hero and heroine, and a fine supporting cast including Dean Stockwell and Carrie Fisher.
With films, timing is very important, and the laughs, the action, and the drama are all timed perfectly. A truly great, underrated sci-fi gem.

Schade eigentlich hier hatte ich etwas mehr erwartet. Doch "The Time Guardian" bietet Storytechnisch nur einen Terminator Abklatsch und in der Mitte ziemliche Leere.
Dabei werden ein paar Überlebende zurück durch die Zeit geschickt um die Erde vor bösen Androiden zu schützen.
Beim Cast kannte ich nur Dean Stockwell und Carrie Fisher. Die spielen ganz in Ordnung wobei es Fisher nur auf eine Nebenrolle verschlägt.
Am besten sind wirklich noch die eingehende Actionsequenz und das knackige Ende. Dort kommen die Stärken des Films durch gerade im Finale. An dem Stellen funktioniert das World Building auch am besten.
Dafür ist es in der Mitte Arsch langweilig und es ist wirklich nix los in der Australischen Wüste.
SC-FI Fans werden hier noch den meisten Spaß haben. Ist am Ende ein typischer Tele 5 Film mit etwas Qualität.
This is more epic and fun that it has any right to be, and honestly, if it had a James Horner score? would be an absolute classic.
kind of an ozsploitation sci-fi, time-hopping romp with slashes of terminator and flash gordon.
Time is a battlefield.

This felt like so many elements was left on papers and a way more ambitious project in this semi decent Australian sci-fi movie.
Tom Burlinson (Flesh + Blood) is once again a poor leading man who lacks serious charisma. DS has very little to do has the Boss in the future parallel segments.
