Now having worked at Troma back in the day AND was the in-house “TOXIE” for 2 years (as well as being considered for the job) I was very bias and honestly a little worried what I wound think of Macon’s studio reimagining of the iconic Troma cult classic.
I’m happy and relieved to report that it only took 2 min of this madcap punk rock motherfucker of a movie for me to fall in love with it’s style, tone and particular sense of humor. Macon, Dinklage and his team knew the ridiculous movie they were making and leaned HARD into it, with fantastic world building and a very confident absurdist take that almost felt like the kind of humor Mike…
Peter Dinklage, even as a mutated toxic monster, is the beating disgusting heart of movie that’s surprisingly at it’s best when it’s pursuing the more emotional father/son dynamics. Oddly, its attempt at being a goopy gorefest, which even for enthusiasts of the genre, is far less impressive— borderline boring? Not sure if I can echo the promise that it’s “over the top.”
Audience seemed to have fun though!
The perfect way to open a celebration like Fantastic Fest. It’s willfully obscene, perfectly profane—a campy salute not just to fans of the original but to all the freaks in the audience.
An extra half a star I’m sure came from watching it with drunken fans, Macon Blair, and Lloyd Kaufman himself (not to mention the guy next to me having the best day of his life).
There's a whole lot of "Huh, I've never seen anyone explode quite like THAT before" in this extremely goofy, utterly self aware remake. Also, there is no scenery left in the entire world because Kevin Bacon has now eaten it all.

Statt des hemmungslosen Irrsinns und Wahnwitz des Originals herrscht hier eine ähnliche Angepasstheit wie in einer Origin-Story von Marvel und nahezu alle anarchischen und subversiven Zwischentöne verlieren sich zwischen mauen Witzchen, schleppendem Pacing und nervigen Vater-Sohn-Drama.
This movie is pretty fun. Low key enjoyed it much more than the original. It’s very different than the original, which I think I liked. Found myself belly laughing a few times, which is rare for me to do. Although different, it should please past Toxic Avenger fans. A solid sophomore film by Oppenheimer’s lawyer Macon Blair.
Wastes no time to develop this sleazy gross tone with so much gonzo gore that just goes insanely over the top in such a quick time, though I can do away with all the cgi gore but this really just had a fast tone and quick story to take in that was quite a fun ride. Yes still feels very Troma but has stronger anti-hero and anti-capitalism themes especially on fucked up healthcare, not getting into my stance on that but this really made that angle work for a sympathetic tone and just made you root for Toxie getting his revenge. Really fucking rad shit that was hilarious and awesome
If there was an Oscar for offscreen dialogue deliveries this movie would win. It's like a 3.5 normally but the nearly nonstop added jokes push it into 4 star territory. "HE SAVED THAT CAT!"
If 1987 Paul Verhoeven made a Troma movie instead of ROBOCOP, you might get something like Macon Blair’s THE TOXIC AVENGER.
2023 Fantastic Fest #4
Gets so many of the little details right (everything on the news, the random ADR’d lines from off-screen extras, the location title cards) but everything happening in the main story feels so…restrained? Very little actual avenging going on (it takes a while to get going) and the poor taste of the original is gone here. It all just feels very safe.
It's not awful, but I don't know who this was made for. Too slick to be offensive, and uh, isn't being offensive what Toxie is all about? A part of it? I just don't get its purpose. I laughed, sure, at times. But it won't stay with me into October.
