I rented this because I read there was a trans character and the story looked potentially interesting, but like...this is an actual movie with heart and personality, WOW. It feels very YA in certain ways, but they happen to be ways I really liked when I was a teen and still have a soft spot for now. Amazed to find out this wasn't based on a book, in the best way possible. And finding out that the screenwriter is trans too?? Someone like me wrote a movie this good? Whew. Today is a good day.
An unpretentious road movie but the emotional authenticity makes it a good film, we are easily carried by this fable nicely fimed. A nice story for kids but it's above all an ode to tolerance on the difference. Cute movie
"God bless all the stupid children" - best line of the film!
An adorable premisse with adorable actors, this film has some great moments, mainly during its last act! The pair of protagonist is great and their stories are beautiful and touching. And all of that is maximized be amazing music! At the same time, the flow of the film felt so unequal and abrupt at times! The "freak show" arc appeared out of thin air and felt too rushed. Besides, that's so overused! Too bad they dragged this arc almost throughout the whole movie. Another problem: the jumps that finished scenes with no real conclusion and characters that vanished suddenly also annoyed me! But it was a worthy experience nonetheless.
I picked this movie based on the title alone. I’m exploring movies that use wolf and werewolf themes and the name Wolfboy suggested a link to the iconic 1941 horror feature The Wolf Man.
Turns out, this is something quite different. It is the story of a 13-year-old boy named Paul (Jaeden Martell) who has a rare medical condition that causes excessive hair growth on his face and body. He regularly suffers abuse related to his appearance, including being likened to a dog or wolf.
The title either insults the main character or it is meant in some ironic sense I didn’t quite get.
That’s how the whole movie feels–hard to get. Literally: I couldn’t hear a lot of the…
this was the most unexpected trans representation i've seen in a movie but also surprisingly well done
This has plenty o’ issues but imma give this 5/5 simply because I could watch a trans girl hitting her bigot mom in the head with a two by four all damn day.
Like a fairy tale YA I would have read and cherished as a kid. Would have been my favorite goddamn movie as a kid. John Turturro is a gift of a human. TRANS SCREENWRITER. TRANS ACTRESS PLAYING A TRANS CHARACTER. Cute and off kilter and odd and lovely. A little hiccupy and doesn’t quite stick the landing buuuuuuuuuut see above. I want twenty more movies like this please and thank.
This film felt like a fairy tale with a modern twist. It's a breath of fresh air with it's approach and I liked the music and loved the gorgeous illustrations used for the different story chapters, but I did feel like there was something missing that I couldn't seem to point my finger on.
“I don’t want to meet others like me.”
-“Why?”
“Because I hate me”
Screened @ 2019 Buffalo Film Fest
This was actually really good. It had a strong message all the way through. I have to commend the writer and especially the EDITOR for fitting a full, interesting story into 88 minutes and not making it feel rushed when it seems like everything else these days is needlessly stretched out to 2.5 hours
A dramatic coming-of-age take on "what if there really was a wolfboy for real?" It's actually pretty good. An honest story about getting over the things that make us different and learning to love ourselves no matter who we may be.
This reminds me a lot of The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot - the title is a bit deceptive and it's way more dramatic than most are probably expecting. But it's still a good film, the drama works well and the story is heartfelt and endearing.
The make-up in this is excellent! Jaeden Lieberher is completely convincing as the Wolfboy.
Right when you get to the point of hating yourself and thinking about how you need to stop smoking weed, John Turturro shows up and (almost) makes deciding to watch this movie pay off. He’s my wolfboy.
