The (early) 90s adaptation of the well-known Henry James novella from the late 19th century is a strange proposition. As the seventh treatment after various television productions and the famous and probably best handling by Jack Clayton, known as “The Innocents”, it´s the third installation for cinema, although the atmosphere sometimes feels like a small edition for the telly, which already comes along with the narrow image format. Not oriented towards width, but designed to bring out the intimate play. You can see the idea.
Apart from some individually seen moody scenes, such as the ghost appearance of the dead predecessor Miss Jessel at the little lake, almost at no time rules…
You've got to respect an early 90's spin on the much-adapted Henry James ghost tale that rocks out with its cock out.
Most movie versions of the story do away with the framing narrative, but here we've got Marianne Faithfull in her first acting stint since the 70's reading the governess's diary during a group session in a sanitarium over the holidays. Her voiceover is interspersed throughout to let us know how our protagonist is feeling, but it's not really necessary since Patsy Kensit plays the role like a wounded animal in the dark woods, the word "vulnerable" written across her forehead. For some reason they felt it necessary to add an additional narrative device in the form of Kensit…
The Peter Quint in this film thinks he is a real hunk, doesn’t he? Hah! He is nothing compared to me! Doesn’t he know less is more when it comes to haunting innocent governesses? Just glide up to the window and be gone in a flash is how it’s done, not flirting with her by lying on her bed with your shirt off, and what is with his shirt anyway? Who does he think he is, a pirate? Far inferior to my effort from 1961. This Peter Quint should be sacked!
Excesiva, trashy, ultragótica discotequera, una mezcla entre Soavi, Russell y un británico puesto de drogas y pasada de todas las vueltas pasables, lo que hace honor al título. Un espanta-puristas anacrónico y erótico con geniales escenas de pesadilla. Me ha encantado y no me arrepiento.
most wacky turn of the screw adaptation ever, it has the dark fairytale vibe, no wonder it was done in the 90s, it is a product of its time. the music became too strident at times, to the point it managed to tire me. the direction is, decent, for a tv movie, kinda corny at times but i suppose it works for what it was trying. i probably wouldn't recommend it? but it has the most lovely versions of miles and flora, the kids rocked!
