Low budget and incredibly charming, The Video Dead is just one of those VHS memories that still holds up for me, only getting better whenever I give it a revisit... plus the fake Zombi/Burial Ground lookin’ movie within this movie that’s called ‘Zombie Blood Nightmare’ is a million percent something I wish was real because it would absolutely be in my top 4 right now.
So yeah, The Video Dead rules and it’s something I think I’ve only ever watched between the hours of 1am and 3am and honestly I wouldn’t want it any other way. With an amazing poster like that there’s no doubt this is my kinda hellraising tv zombie chainsaw jam.

Obviously I had to watch this after watching TerrorVision and I really love this a little mire on each viewing. It’s such a classic 80’s low budget film with some of the strongest video store vibes ever. There’s no video store in the movie, but it just radiates that whole feel so well. I mean, that VHS cover is on of the greatest of its time!

Wow, I absolutely loved this! For a movie with such a limited budget this actually had amazing make-up work and gore fx. These zombies looked fantastic! It is such a viby movie too, perfect for a September/October viewing. I'm glad I finally checked this out.
The Video Dead is the ultimate late night substance induced fever dream. A movie that exists in it's own hazy dimension where the rational reality has melted away and left behind a world that's entirely unique and absurd. Penniless '80s horror banished to video-only release (back when that was still rare) but kind of appropriately, given the title and premise (zombies come out of a video tape playing on TV). Manages to overcome looking not on purpose like "Skinamarink" and all the insanely bad acting by putting tremendous effort into the gnarly make-up for each undead person and turning them into a motley crew of eccentrics with a flair for homicide, reminiscent of the what "Return of the Living Dead" was trying to do. I'll start off by saying the poster doesn't really do this film justice at all! You would think you are getting some scary zombie mayhem but instead what you get is utter low-budget zombie hilarity. very cheap and cheesy, but some of the effects were good and there are a few fun moments. my biggest issue with this is the weak story. if you're not going to put much effort into the story, i'd at least expect more interesting characters and unique kills.
Not bad considering the obvious low budget and the inherent limitations of the production.
Has the ability to transport you to a specific time in the late 80s with authentic looking sets, like you’re watching someone’s VHS home movies, only with zombies. Though it is kind of strange how each wall is completely blank white, I suppose a giant canvas awaiting the impending blood splatter design.
The last time I saw this was on a DVD through the Netflix by mail service. I recall being somewhat disappointed because I expected the movie to live up to that awesome poster art, but it actually kind of does now that I know what it is.

Journey Into Darkness x 31 Frenzied Frolics: Day #3
Appropriately autumnal, delightfully corny and real bad in some of the best ways a film of this caliber can be, The Video Dead overstays it’s welcome by about 20 minutes, and is loaded with unintentionally hilarious moments stuffed full of charmingly trash acting and abysmally written dialogue. Fairly surprisingly, it does have some kickass make-up and gore effects, especially considering its crazy low budget, so points for that. For some 80’s direct-to-video camp crap, I had fun with this schlocky romp, even though it tested my patience at times.
