Review by Eric Hillis
Like the recent Brazilian dramas Divine Love and Raquel 1:1, Bolivian filmmaker Martín Boulocq's The Visitor is another sideways glance at the growing influence of the evangelical church in South America. Where the aforementioned Brazilian films critiqued the church's misogyny, The Visitor exposes the hypocrisy of a church that preaches goodwill while refusing to extend its warmth to those attempting to make up for past sins.
After serving a three year prison sentence for an ambiguous crime seemingly spawned by his alcoholism, Humberto (Enrique Aráoz) returns to his hometown hoping to reestablish a relationship with his teenage daughter Aleida (Svet Mena). The girl now lives with her maternal grandparents, Carlos (César Troncoso) and Elizabeth (Mirella Pascual),…

A solemn film about a father trying to reconnect with his daughter after his release from prison. It's slow moving but never boring and I particularly loved the use of sound from the opera singing to the painful creaking of a tree. One of those Sunday afternoon films where you can easily slip into the melancholy for 85 minutes.
Tribeca 2022.
This is a movie that a lot of modern audiences wouldn’t have the patience for. We are given a character with a troubled past, yet we see no violence; there’s a rebellious daughter, but we don’t see her shenanigans; and there’s a corrupt church, but we don’t see it crumble. It’s slow and generally lacks dialogue; however, this movie still managed to engage with an examination of broken characters struggling to become whole.
It’s compelling in a subtle way. It’s specific and distant. I don’t know that I would recommend it because I think it’s for a specific type of person, but it’s certainly well-made.

We are all powerless and life is hard.
Some people choose the bottle, others the needle. Some people embrace the futility of effort and fall complacent in the arms of the lord. Still, others fight and claw their way out of the pit of despair, only to find that just as it is bottomless, there's no hole at the top to climb out of.
We are all Powerless and Life is Hard.
Some people have bad days and others have bad years. Some people make mistakes and are forgiven, others are punished and can never earn back the trust of their loved ones. Still, others are prevented from ever earning their salvation due to the discretion of those,…

a slow burn about people abusing other people for better things where all roads lead to religion with a great lead performance.
An understated yet stirring drama. There's a great script that's easy on the dialogue and smart with its peaks inside the lead character's return home. Love the locked-off shots with action unfolding and an emphasis on tableaus and framing characters against their environment. Appreciate the removed and suspicious look at religion. It's great how opera and tragedy are woven into the well directed and well told story.
Just released from prison after serving several years for a never specified conviction, Humberto tries to reestablish himself in the community and, more importantly, in his teenage daughter's life. The girl is in the charge of her mother's wealthy parents, who reign over a lucrative evangelical church. Her mother, one suspects, killed herself at some time in the past, suffering from depression. To maximize access to his daughter and soon, he hopes, gain custody of her, Humberto, who is a fine, in-demand operatic singer of songs at funerals, reluctantly professes faith he clearly doesn't hold and grudgingly participates in his in-law's church. Eager to improve his circumstances and position himself to reclaim his daughter he also launches a phone card…
Loved the confident, sparse editing (less is indeed more.) Ending was unsatisfying, but I sure enjoyed the ride.
This peaks at the moment where our protagonist zones out of a bullshit religious service and fantasises singing Nessun Dorma instead. I feel that, buddy, I was just about zoning out too.
