  The Void has what you are looking for, if what you are looking for is a steady atmosphere of grim, forlorn dankness, barely sufficient acting with flares of something beyond, nearly abandoned rotting hospitals, extraterrestrial gods, beshrouded cultists with knives, and XTREME Carpenter Worship executed with dope practical effects. The Void also scores in not fetishizing retro-ness, nor in winking at its audience, but forging its own updates and patches to well-hewn and precleared form. As a film it is more set-up and pay-off of set-pieces but for myself this enhances rather than detracts from durability and rewatchableness.   HP Lovecraft meets John Carpenter's The Thing meets Prince of Darkness meets Assault on Precinct 13 meets Baskin.

  The practical effects in Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski's The Void are off the hook. They have an old school vibe, and they're a throwback to classic body horror movies. It should be expected, since both directors have a background in special effects makeup. I'm a sucker for practical effects mixed with a synth score. I tend to overlook faults, when this combo is present.

  I get the complaints that this is derivative, that it’s basically a Hellraiser sequel, that it’s not very original, that the practical effects are very similar to The Thing, and etc etc etc. That’s all one way to look at it sure.

  But it’s also got that real dark shit atmosphere for days and it’s really fun and gross and gooey and sometimes, most times really, that’s all I need to love a movie.

  When making a tribute to days gone by, it is often the best choice to not copy the films from that era but to try to get to the essence of them and subsequently make your own movie.

  The Void understands this perfectly.

  From the opening shot that leaves no doubt as to what you're watching till the final shot that made me remember so many brilliant Lovecraft inspired horror gems of the 80s, The Void garners its strength from such a strong sense of identity it is difficult to not be swept along in its nostalgic atmosphere.
