Charles Duchemin, a well-known gourmet and publisher of a famous restaurant guide, is waging a war against fast food entrepreneur Tri- catel to save the French art of cooking. After having agreed to appear on a talk show to show his skills in naming food and wine by taste, he is confronted with two disasters: his son wants to become a clown rather than a restaurant tester and he, the famous Charles Duchemin, has lost his taste!

Part of me really wants to do a postcolonial analysis of this film. I find there's something very colonial/imperialistic about the restoration industry, specifically how world cuisine is exoticized and exploited in our society. The tastemakers are old white men who get to decide who's restaurant stays in business, and who doesn't. And why do they get to do that? Convention, tradition, money and power, rather than actually being good cooks themselves. There's plenty more to talk about, like Duchemin's relationship with his son, the past vs. the future of food, and the industrialization of food, but I'm in a class right now so I should probably write notes for that instead of this lol
Als Kind/Jugendlicher hat man sich an den slapstickhaften Szenen kringelig gelacht, auch wenn diese hier ein wenig spärlicher gesät sind aufgrund der 2 Herzinfarkte, die Funès vor diesem Film erleiden musste. Als Erwachsener hat man zusätzlich Spaß an der Kritik zur Nahrungsmittelindustrie sowie an den tragikomischen Aspekten. BRUST ODER KEULE ist nicht nur eins davon sondern der ganze Hahn und somit Funès Top 3 Material.
It's unfortunate that Pierre Richard withdrew from the project because he was actually perfect to play the son, but instead we got Coluche who is also pretty good. De Funès is hilarious nothing new there, but the material they gave him is much better than other things he did in the 70s. The story also has about three concise segments linked by a through line, which was very well done. Probably the high point of his late career.

Brust oder Keule ist in seiner Rezeptur weniger überambitionierte Molekularküche, sondern vielmehr ein gutbäuerliches und altbewährtes Boeuf Bourguignon, das auch nach Jahren noch immer haargenau so schmeckt wie bei Oma in der Stube und mich mit seinem nostalgischen Charme stets aufs Neue in längst vergangene Kindheitstage entführt.
Unter der bonbonfarbenen und tonal vollkommen überdrehten Oberfläche findet sich in diesem Slapstick-Fest eine durchaus berechtigte und sehr anschaulich umgesetzte Kritik an sowohl Spitzengastronomie als auch Lebensmittelindustrie.
Der Zahn der Zeit nagt merklich an den Comedyelementen, die doch etwas sehr vorhersehbar sind, die kritische Ebene ist aber heute ebenso aktuell wie damals.
J'apprécie l'absence de bruits de mastication, design au rendez-vous, Louis De Funès.
BRUST ODER KEULE zählt zu den besten Louis De Funes-Filmen, der neben dem bewährten Slapstick-Konzept, um den cholerisch, hippeligen Meister-Komiker, mit seiner Kritik an der Lebensmittelmassenproduktion ein weiterhin aktuelles Thema anspricht. Dazu gefällt die Vater/Sohn-Dynamik zwischen Louis De Funes und Coluche, die großartig miteinander harmonieren. Köstlicher Komödien-Klassiker mit einem Louis De Funes in Topform.
