  Make no mistake, The Woman King is a movie filled with gripping scenes delivered by powerhouse performances from its entire cast, Lashana Lynch being my personal favorite. But also, the movie kicks so much ass. 

  Studios take note, this how you do action in a PG-13 movie. Stunning choreography mixed with high octane energy- every battle scene is equal parts suspenseful, brutal, and breathtaking. 

  The movie may meander a bit in the middle, but it starts and ends with an absolute bang.

  Viola Davis would have made an incredible silent movie star. When she fixes her eyes on someone in close-up, dialogue becomes completely superfluous. She can stare with furious anger or inspect with barely controlled emotion. In The Woman King, she gets to show off a whole arsenal of impressive fighting moves, lashing out at her enemies with swords and knives and a variety of mixed martial arts. But I found myself marveling most at the incredible things she can do with just her eyes. They’re her greatest weapons.

  The Woman King is essential in today's Hollywood machine, a throwback to the powerful historical epics that have become more rare with time. Factual inaccuracies aside, lots of people simply don't know about the intricacies of the slave trade inside Africa and what better way to draw audiences into this troubling and complicated subject by pairing badass female warriors with thrilling fight choreography.

  It's the electric performances that spark the story and drive the emotional beats. Lashana Lynch kicks ass and oozes charisma in a star-making turn and newcomer Thuso Mbedu is a revelation but it’s Viola Davis I want to talk about ane I could write an entire essay on her performance.

  The actual history behind the Dahomey Tribe stems from them owning slaves. In a media literacy sense, you have to understand the repercussions of portraying these people as the “heroes” of the story. Hollywood has always entertained the idea of “Based on A True Story”.
