The Universe of Jacques Demy
Not accepting anything less than someone who is willing to make not just one but two whole-ass films born out of their undying love for me for any longer.
Agnès Varda really out here stretching the definitions of what unchecked adoration could and should look like to near cosmic proportions and making it all appear so blasé in the process. Which it may just be when said souls are so entwined in consumed passion that they literally become one for fear that love will be the end entirely if not just a new beginning.
And that ending may just be better shared. I come away with a newfound appreciation for the ability of the human spirit at its strongest to…
i haven't stopped smiling since the beginning of this. a beautifully crafted, inspirational, and enlightening documentary in which Varda beautifully memorializes the life and distinguished career of Demy. after all these years, seeing how much he meant to everyone is very, very moving and bittersweet. a must for fans of his films, for sure
A nice documentary tribute to Demy from his wife Agnes Varda, with most of her personal affection restrained to the margins of an achronological, movie-by-movie examination of his work and life. But it begins and ends on an absolutely perfect note, a letter written by one of his many admirers but sent too late to reach him before he died, it's like something out of a Demy film, right down to the casting.
The big lessons for me:
- Demy is mostly cinephile fodder here in the US, so it's striking to see just how deeply loved he is by almost everybody in France. There's a road named after him in Nantes, as well as a school, and Varda gets…
are we surprised by my rating… it’s literally a walkthrough of jacques demy’s entire filmography directed by the queen of cinema herself… i would murder for this man
Agnes Varda attempts to reflect on the work of her late husband while her cat attempts to put its butthole in her face.
A documentary about my favorite filmmaker made by his beloved wife, of course I’d give this five stars!
Such a heartwarming documentary. Definitely a great companion piece if you've seen a lot of Demy films. Varda's love for Demy is practically overflowing, and it is so touching to see her make not one, but two tributes to her late husband.
The fact that bad things have ever happened to Agnes Varda.. makes me so angry 😡
anything agnes makes about jacques, instantly gets a five stars from me <3 they were literally eachother’s half i just love them so much. it's like coming home after a long and tiring day and at the end of the day you get this sudden burst of fulfillment after watching OK IM BLABBERING NOW IM SORRY i just love him so much pls goodnight
even though agnes doesnt dip into the too personal, this doc just drips with love and passion from everyone in it, like their words become hers.
I have officially been logging films for one whole year! I started while in quarantine after my trip to India and in some ways, my journey in film has impacted me more than my trip across the world. I have discovered things about myself that I never would have without the films I watched over the past year. I am so thankful to have elevated my relationship with film the way I have!
Also-- this was a very adorable documentary.
