I think it's amazing how Japanese directors will just do whatever is in demand at the time without anyone even batting an eye when that means going from Sexy Timetrip Ninjas to a bubble era "crazy family" dramedy and then straight up winning an Oscar in 2008 for Departures. I find this type of movie a little too intentionally unpleasant, but I've seen worse and all in all held my interest OK despite being 2 hours. Michelle picked this at random. I didn't remember why I even had a copy until I saw Kaori Momoi's name.
Itami-lite comedy about a family struggles and schemes during Japan's late 80s economic bubble. At times a little broad and long, but it has a fine balance between sentiment and bite and a very good cast.
