It’s becoming clear that at least at the outset of his career, Trier, like Mia Hansen-Love, is making movies whose main focus is youth, with all its possibilities and its restrictions.
Here the contradiction of a religious upbringing and modern biology as taught in secular Scandinavia leads to (BANG!) by college age, which is also a time of first psychoses (often worsened by the ingestion of drugs).
Is the first awakening of sexual desire a Satanic impulse, or is the idea of heaven and hell and the need for confession the root of our problems?
Also, Trier’s and Hansen-Love’s films are just plain BEAUTIFUL to see and hear. Pacing, framing, lighting, editing and scores are tastefully (again, Scandinavia!) chosen. Can’t wait for them to get a little more gutsy, Bergman-style, although Bergman was probably more of a destructive, macho type than these two.
