Donga Donga
enjoyable action caper collab from mani ratnam and ram gopal varma; kind of long-winded, but it's hard not to appreciate mani's distinct flavor of straightforward down-n-dirty masala, from his signature eye for light to the songs (very early rahman featuring his much punchier synthpop sound synced to blisteringly fast choreography) to the genuinely dangerous practical stuntwork. the traintop fights here make chaiyya chaiyya seem like nothing.
long chase sequences, a large sum of money, automobiles exploding and/or flying about, exquisite song-and-dance set pieces (among other things, some of ar rahman's very greatest compositions), all of which somewhat inexplicably lead to a moment of heartbreaking delicacy between the three lovers (that is eventually diffused with effortless comic grace). i love this film!
An ambitious film which just falls short of greatness. The soundtrack is astounding and one of A.R. Rahman's top five soundtracks of the Nineties. My personal favourite track is the irresistibly catchy " Kannum Kannum" with the slick dance moves. The problem is other than the two main leads none of the other characters are interesting especially the legendary singer who i feel was terribly miscast. The length is over indulgent and gets a tad too melodramatic in the third act. It's a fun road cum buddy movie but deserved a better antagonist. Still it's definitely worth a watch.

"The concept of Thiruda Thiruda is terrific (it’s a comic-book caper, revolving around a truckload of freshly minted currency), but despite some crackling comedy, the film is never as fun as you’d imagine."
