i cannot believe a documentary on THIS subject was directed by a man. i really cannot believe a bunch of people decided this should be made by a man. the irony.
in a minute you're like YES THAT'S RIGHT and in the next "directed by tom donahue" lmao
mostly a well constructed, interesting, poignant doc... only to find out that it was directed by a man. a film so hell bent on emphasizing importance of women behind the camera is directed by a male of all people. i don’t know if i want to laugh, cry, or scream. tom should’ve just sat there and ate his food.
going to use this review to beg you to please make an effort to support women filmmakers. some of y’all think female directors start and end at sofia copolla, and it shows! just this year i really started paying attention to who’s behind the camera, and it’s been a rewarding decision. it feels good to watch art made by fellow women.…
This is filled with truly jaw-dropping data and revelations, and I really hope people who need to see it do.
(To anyone frustrated that it was directed by a man (like I was): it was his idea and he took it to all the right people to get it made correctly. Also, a point the film makes is that it shouldn’t be entirely up to the oppressed to fix oppression, so male allies are nothing to balk at. Source: Geena Davis herself at the Q&A.)
When it cut to black, and ‘Directed by Tom Donahue’ came on screen, it felt like the biggest slap in the face to the documentary that came before it.
Edinburgh International Film Festival 2019 Screening
In a shocking twist that no one could have ever predicted, this film was directed by a man. And the whole movie is about making a case to hire more women as directors.
Good documentary
Very interesting.
Was shocked that they didn't mention Jody Foster at all.
She's female and she directed films.. Why was she not mentioned?
When watching cartoons/ animation films it never dawned on me that there's more "male" than "female" cast.

Not a perfect documentary, especially at the end when it falls into the hopefulness the rest of the film seems frustrated at. And yeah, it's directed by a man, which seems to counter the whole point. But from what I see in interviews, the women who produced it acted as hands-on producers and basically shaped the story
But regardless of all of that, I'm just glad this is a film on an honest and important subject and most the reviews here are honest reactions. My years of social media has given me ptsd that a film about more women directing just leads to mouthbreathing, knuckledraggers slobbering on about how woke Hollywood is.
I may not love this movie but it reminds me why I love letterboxd. Please keep those people on Facebook
