I guess we all knew how this was gonna end but that doesn’t make it any more palpable. Irene babe i love you, but say it with me:
Fuck that guy.
I've never loved to hate anyone more than Constance Cummings in this pic. Her performance as the conniving, man-eating, surface-sweet stone-cold bitch was brilliant. The part was well written, and she looked like a million bucks too.
But man I wanted to hit Ralph Bellamy with a poker from the fireplace or something... Irene Dunne deserved so so so much better. I found myself yelling at the screen to an 87 year-old movie "Dump his ass!!"
A young married couple (Irene Dunne and Ralph Bellamy) have their union threatened when his old girlfriend (Constance Cummings) shows up freshly after having gotten a divorce. The wife’s friend (Kay Johnson) provides moral support and tries to look out for her.
Despite a decent premise and the three strong female actors who all perform well in their roles, the way the story plays out is bound to irritate modern viewers, say what you will about it providing a window into the time period. The film is only 76 minutes long so while maddening, it’s somewhat forgivable that the husband’s head is completely turned so quickly, despite his saintly wife being so tolerant of his less than ideal nature (among…
It was a great script and the acting was wonderful. I just didn't like the conclusion. Ralph Bellamy didn't deserve Irene Dunne after what he pulled. What an idiot! He finally has the girl and then screws things up. LOL
I audibly gasped when Constance Cummings entered as Bellamy's former flame. The sweet, adorable Constance turned in a wickedly good performance!
Well this was very enjoyable, with great performances all around. It took a domestic violence turn towards the end, but fortunately nothing as extreme as a few other films I’ve seen from that era.
And also it’s fun to see two women fighting over Ralph Bellamy given his later reputation as the guy who never gets the girl.
Stupid stupid Ralph Bellamy! Falling for his old manipulative flame when he's already in a perfect marriage! The good wife is Irene Dunne. But I'll admit it. I would have been just as stupid as Bellamy because the old flame is the wonderful Constance Cummings - and that's exactly what she's make me do!
Cummings is terrific as the sweet bitch! You just want to do what Bellamy ends up doing, and perhaps throw in a couple of more punches and maybe a kick.....
Watched this on the pretence that this was a Christmas film. Not a single bough of holly to be seen.
