  They used to make like 15 of these a year and I was like yeah sure whatever. Now in 2021 a good 100-minute thriller for adults featuring actual movie stars feels like a rare precious gem that must be celebrated

  A simple but smoldering throwback to the days when all you needed to make a decent action film was a big star, a striking location, and a few cold henchman carrying those fancy machine guns with the red laser sights, Taylor Sheridan’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead” is nothing short of the most rock-solid blockbuster of the 1994 summer movie season. In 2021, it can’t help but feel like an unintended anachronism; as if Sheridan aimed for something that matched the gravitas he wrote into “Sicario” or the dark portent he blew into “Wind River,” fell very far short, and landed in a pillowy bed of old popcorn instead. That may not be high praise, but it sure as hell…

  Unmercifully almost entirely free of incident save for a 20-minute stretch towards the end. The B-plot about Bernthal's character and his pregnant wife is the more interesting story.

  THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD is the kind of mid-budget adult thriller that we need more of in today’s cinematic climate. Taylor Sheridan’s screenplay may lack the spark of his previous efforts but he makes up for it with brutal action, a larger (burning) canvas & a solid ensemble led by the awesome Angelina Jolie!

  I think this one might be kind of brilliant, and had I the wherewithal and the planning to have waited to see in theaters, I would maybe call it a soft masterpiece. listen, I texted Caroline that I might have loved the picture and she texted me back the absurd screenshot of Aidan Gillan and Nick Hoult in their "ma'am, we're here to check your meter" disguises with a voice memo that said, "why are they wearing different outfits? why are they different heights? you're not gonna let these guys in your house," which, to me, is a grade-a symbol of movie magic.   Color me disappointed.

  I expected a lot more from Taylor Sheridan. Those Who Wish Me Dead is about as generic as an action movie can get. Angelina Jolie sleepwalks through the movie like her name is Bruce Willis DTV action star. In my opinion, she is miscast.

  Thankfully, Jon Bernthal and Medina Senghore save the movie from being a total dud. I cared way more about their arc than anything else.

  The bad guys are as stale as month old bread. I kept waiting for Howie Long to appear, because I could have sworn this was a spiritual sequel to Firestorm. It simply did not work for me. Put this fire out! There are way more satisfying films for you to watch this weekend.

  Wikipedia describes this as a “American neo-Western action thriller” which is a very fancy way of saying “the kind of stock star vehicle that Sylvester Stallone used to churn out twice a year in the 1990s.” Angelina Jolie doesn’t have much to do here, even with her character’s tragic smokejumper backstory (is there any other kind of smokejumper backstory?) and her ability to literally jump out of the way of lightning strikes. Jon Bernthal and Medina Senghore are a lot more interesting as the local sheriff and his pregnant wife who get dragged into the hunt for a kid with some evidence that a bunch of underworld types don’t want to get out.
