  Grief in cinema is so important to me. I've been through grief at its worse, and I still can't really put into words what it feels like. But in Blue, the feeling is perfectly portrayed, through anger, pain, longing, forgiveness, and desperation. 

  Because grief is not black and white, grief is blue. Grief is everything you've ever felt at once, tangled up in your stomach in knots. Grief is when Julie runs her knuckles across a wall to taste the blood coming from her own hands. I love grief in cinema because of films like this. Blue is perfect.

  Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colors trilogy is probably my personal favorite and one of the most consistently perfect trilogies ever created. The amount of painstaking effort and detail that he put into these three films is at the very least commendable, and at best masterful. The cinematography ensures that there is a constant blue aura surrounding each and every scene, personifying the emotional journey that Julie (Juliette Binoche) experiences throughout the film.   In a 1995 documentary interview shot 10 months before his death in the middle of heart surgery at the age of 54, the great Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski gave himself the kind of backhanded compliment that captured both his wry sense of humor and his cancerous frustration with the limitations of his cinema (or was it the cinema itself?). “I have one good characteristic,” he blankly confessed to the camera. “I’m a pessimist, so I always imagine the worst. To me, the future is a black hole. It frightens me.”

  Hoped to warm up to this, since I hadn't yet become a Kieslowski fan when I originally saw it (Red turned me around, followed by The Decalogue), but it still seems like an unilluminating wallow, notable mostly for the play of light on Binoche's face and those striking symphonic mid-scene blackouts. Relinquishing everything is inherently undramatic, and Kieslowski's often striking images can't fill the void; nor am I convinced when Julie's discovery of her late husband's adultery suddenly inspires her to reconnect. (The suggestion that his famed compositions were ghosted by her, whatever its thematic relevance, is a serious eye-roller.) And there's no defending the hamfisted symbolism of Julie's mom, addled by dementia, watching bungee-jumpers on TV. I'M FREEEEE, NO I'M NOOOOOT! Jesus christ in my opinion.

  I have not yet seen the rest of the Three Colors trilogy, so anything I write here is outside of that context.

  I am afraid that freedom is a myth. Certainly, we are never free of the consequences of our actions, of our pasts. I wish it were otherwise, but I suspect there is no clean break from the past. Even if we move physically away, the emotional content of the past will linger. Kieslowski illustrates this in a more literal fashion, as Julie attempts to sever all her previous emotional connections--selling the house, trashing the compositions, breaking a heart, escaping into the maze of Paris--but somehow is tracked down by figures from before her grief and loss.
