Falling squarely in the Krimi sub-category that I like to call the "Men's Adventure Krimi" — a sub that includes not only KOMMISSAR X, but also JERRY COTTON, the FU MANCHU cycle, and various Edgar Wallace "adventures" produced by Harry Alan Towers (think COAST OF SKELETONS or MOZAMBIQUE) — the KOMMISSAR X's splice their DNA from a handful of sources:
1. The Eurospy cycle, jump-started by the success of Bond. Everything from DEADLIER TO THE MALE to OSS 117.
2. The Mondo travelogue. Probably half of any given KOMMISSAR X features documentary-style footage of whatever "exotic" locale Jo Walker and Tom Rowland have been dispatched to.
