so glad this was on MUBI so I could re-watch it! throat-singing is one of humanity's most unique and beautiful ways of making music, and the scenery of the arctic is incomparable.
A cool snapshot of Kangirsuk, though incredibly fleeting and scattershot in a way that feels rushed to match the shorter runtime. A cool little film, but more interesting as a proposition toward something bigger than it is as its own work.
I don't know why I thought a 4 minute short would give me a feeling of immersion in a different culture. 4 minutes is not enough for that, though this film uses its 4 minutes fairly well, glimpsing shots of the town and landscape as two throat singers regale us with their throat singing stylings. Feels like a splinter off of a larger whole.
A beautiful little slice of cinéma pur; Inuit throat singing accompanied by gorgeous footage of the arctic. Minimalist, but like the best tone poems, it's evocative, elemental, aesthetically pleasing, and entirely unconcerned with being anything but what it presents to the audience.
