really gorgeous way to explore religious trauma, misogyny, the beauty of exploration, and teen angst in turn of the century rural Switzerland. i really really really really really hope more people keep giving money to this director to make more and more and more things.

I always complain about the way Switzerland is portrayed on film. I think the Alps as a topic is way underused. This movie is doing exactly what I wish for. It is visually stunning and understanding both its surroundings and subjects. Although a little slow at times, the film has a unique way of portraying vulnerability, sensuality and religion. It is both intimate and claustrophobic, both heretic and praise-singing, both pleasure and pain. Innocente and Elisabeth are my girls frl! And sometimes all you want is to have three boyfriends and have those three boyfriends be boyfriends! I get it, I really do.

I’ve never seen a movie like this. Quite an inventive and poignant exploration of faith, shame, desire, misogyny, and coming of age. This took me on a ride. And a first feature? Damn. Best of TIFF for me so far.

Thunder is the International Feature submission for Switzerland. Written and directed by Carmen Jaquier, the film is set in the summer of the 1900s in a small Swiss town in southern Switzerland. Elisabeth, who’s now 17, has been living in a convent for the past five years. Upon learning about the sudden death of her older sister, Innocente, she returns back to her family farm to help with the household chores and to find out what happened with her sister’s disappearance.
As Elisabeth slowly begins to discover more about Innocente and her life and death, she reunites with boys from her childhood which will awaken new desires within her, and as a result…
