  Tiger Stripes may not be the first film to translate menstruation into body horror*, but Amanda Nell Eu's directorial debut was nonetheless striking enough with its energetic approach to the material that it nabbed the director the Grand Prize at this year's Critics Week in Cannes. Anchored by a simple but effectively physical performance from young Zafreen Zairizal, the film finds a way to play up the camp of its scale-to-ambitions ratio to become ultimately endearing, if not entirely robust.

  I'm surprised that this movie won the Critics' Week Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. However, when I discovered that Audrey Diwan is the Jury President, everything suddenly makes sense.
  
  "Tiger Stripes" is similar to all of Julia Ducournau's movies, as it explores female coming-of-age and sexual exploration within the horror genre. Instead of depicting car sex and cannibalism, the film tells the story of a girl who transforms into a tiger. 🐅

  The VFX are quite poor, and all the sounds are incredibly loud (my ears are bleeding🩸), but the music is pretty 🔥. I need the soundtrack asap.

  Starting puberty? Here comes Tiger Stripes; the Malaysian body horror film where a young girl is going through a menstrual nightmare. My first advice is to approach it like a comedy/fantasy that never goes overboard with its horror themes. It would make (perhaps?) the whole thing more agreeable in my opinion. Don’t be surprised if you feel the movie should have ended sooner; I think it will be the consensus.

  God this had so much potential 😭 the thematics were so interesting in the first half but the second half moves like molasses and none of the young actors seemed to have had much direction beyond “growl” or “scream.” This truly could’ve been an all-timer. Rats. I’m always game to see Malaysia on the big screen, though.

  Y'all literally have no idea how true to life this movie is and it shooowwwwssss

  Funny and spooky, perfectly cast and done with an incredible attention to detail. Set design, soundscape, script all of it.
  So fucking awesome seeing a movie like this come out of Malaysia and so fucking tragic that it will most definitely be censored.

  ++ ballsy as fuck for depicting Malay girls' sexuality. Note that in our last general elections the Islamist party won a majority for the first time since Independence. Idk look it up - films like this simply do not happen

  With the exuberant TikTok challenges, explorations with oppositional body imagery and its shift in power dynamics due to a changing body, Tiger Stripes works best as a coming of age movie. I don't think it works very well as a body horror movie but that will give it more of a global audience, though I wish that wasn't the easiest path to worldwide eyes because the three young girls are so amazing in the dramatic and comedic beats. In the horror realm, The Crucible nods — and the shaman who's called in to expel whatever evil is being seen by multiple girls — work far better than the creature transformation beats, since it follows a pretty familiar menstruation horror path. But the young actors are fantastic throughout.

  Another worthy entry in the monstrous feminine canon. At times it does kind of feel like a debut; occasionally, I felt like the film relied on humor a bit too much even during the serious moments. Some of the moments where Zaffan goes really crazy seems kind of cheesy at times, but at the same time, there's a lot of charm to it. It also felt like the film didn't really know how to end, and the last shot did leave me somewhat unsatisfied.

  However, I was thoroughly impressed by the depiction of Malaysian culture and its honest depiction of puberty and girlhood. Overall, I really enjoyed it.
